SEMI AUTONOMOUS DETECTION OF ROADWAY
FROM AERIAL IMAGES

By
S.SARAVANAN 420711401013

Under The Guidance Of
Mrs.J. Rajalakshmi M.E.
Assistant professor.

Project Coordinator
Dr. Srinivasan Alavandar M.E.,PhD(IIT),
Professor & Head.
ECE Department.

PREPROCESSING

Pre-processing is required to improve the image
quality and to generate the elongated road network
for further processing.
Image is obtained from the satellite image database
(IKONOS)
RGB to GRAY conversion.
Histogram equlization
Histogram equalization is a technique for
adjusting image intensities to enhance contrast.

4
Discrete wavelet transform
The original image is firstly decomposed to the desired
resolution using the 2Ddiscrete wavelet transform
(DWT).
DWT is used to reduce the dimension while it preserve
the essential information. It retains the information of
the roads and remove most undesirable noises
such as thin lanes (sidewalks) and other edges.

6
Median filter
Median filtering is similar to using an averaging filter, in
that each output pixel is set to an average of the pixel
values in the neighborhood of the corresponding input
pixel.
Median filtering is therefore better able to remove these
outliers without reducing the sharpness of the image
regions/segments are generated.
The median filter proves to be effective in eliminating
small vehicles on roadsides in the imagery.
At the meantime, this method is simple, quick and
automatic, hence the advantage of applying to high
spatial resolution images of huge volumes.

8
Edge detection
After the filtering process the edge
detection is to done to extract the
road,
Edge detector used here is canny
edge detector, but it is not so
accurate.
