INTRODUCTION
SBL is a next generation directed energy
missile defence
Laser weapons, based in space and capable of
the global projection of power to attack a wide
range of targets.

NEED OF SBLD
The laser offers the potential to destroy missiles
during the boost phase.

ARCHITECTURE OF SBL
Four major subsystems:

A laser device
Optics and beam control system
Acquisition, tracking, pointing and fire control (atp/fc) system
Associated space systems

Three laser systems are being considered for
space-based laser weapons. These are all
chemical lasers and involve mixing chemicals
together inside the laser cavities to create the
laser beam.
The competing lasers are hydrogen fluoride
(HF), deuterium fluoride (DF), and chemical
oxygen iodine (COI).

A Laser Device
Optics And Beam Control System
The optical components not only direct the laser
beam to its target, but they also relay the laser energy
and when required, correct for any atmospheric
turbulence that will distort the beam.

Adaptive Optics
These systems use sophisticated optics in order to
pre-compensate the laser beam for atmospheric
turbulence.

Acquisition, Tracking, Pointing and Fire
Control System

A SBL needs to locate the missile (acquisition),
track its motion (tracking), determine the laser
aim point and maintain the laser energy on the
target (pointing), and finally swing to a new
target (fire control).
Associated Space Systems
The associated space systems provide the
necessary electrical power, command and
control, laser reactants, and on-board data
processing.
ARCHITECTURE EVALUAION
The SBL concept has to overcome several significant
technological and operational challenges.

The operational concerns are related to its on-orbit
logistics.

Since the laser is chemically fueled, the space-based
laser is only capable of a limited number of shots(75)
before its fuel is depleted.

CONCLUSION
Space has provided a new dimension to
warfare with the domain of conflict extending
from Earth to Space.
Therefore, to safeguard our territory and
people, India must develop and integrate the
Space Based Laser Defence system with the
National Air Defence network, desirably
under the functional control of IAF.
