SHERLOCK HOLMES

Sherlock Holmes , a British movie (2009) portrays the Industrial Age London (1800-1900) as per the literature of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle namely Sherlock Holmes. This movie puts up the then modern inventions as such steam engines in boats and trains but with a very less number of motorized personal vehicles and also the predecessors of modern warfare (pistols and bio chemical ammunition).

In this picture., they have tried to perceive the incidents that were considered major in the then on-going time. The ideas were taken from the old existing photos, sketches and literature description.

Here, the construction of the London bridge is promoted by graphics as per this photograph which was one of the few which portrayed the real construction of London Bridge. In the movie , the climax where Lord Blackwood hangs himself accidentally in his duel with Sherlock Holmes along with Lady Adler is played atop the construction site of the London bridge.

The then population of London was 43 lakhs including the countryside., and the city was 36% smaller than the present day London. In this time period, the Monarch was the ruling power and was considered one of the biggest colonial power all around the world. The vehicles that are depicted are carriages and human pulled carts., proposing the incapability of the promotion of steam engine powered vehicles under the false premonition of abomination.

The cityscape shown brings out the presumably 18th century London with the planning structure with which it was designed. It shows the segregation of the industrial, commercial, and residential spaces as planned by the Master Architect Sir Edwin Lutyens well laid pathways and infrastructure facilities well suited for that time, The second picture shows the sewer lines running out to River Thames, a judgmental cause at that time., but cannot be taken into the modern day times as the pollution over time has increased dramatically by 87% as per the UK pollution control.

Hence the movie Sherlock Holmes was a fine example of how the city flourished and survived under various resources, powers and threats to the present United Kingdom living eventually for a time period 1800 years., in its very crucial transformation from agricultural to a thriving industrial based population.
