Global Data Synchronization

What is Global Data Synchronization (GDS)?

As the pressure intensifies on supply chains to deliver

products faster and more effectively, manufacturers, distributors and retailers worldwide are implementing global data synchronization strategies and turning to the Global Data Synchronization Network (GDSN).
The Global Data Synchronization Network (GDSN) is an

Internet-based end-to-end integration system, allowing trading partners (Manufacturers, Distributors, Wholesalers, Retailers, Food Service operators and Healthcare organizations) to securely access and exchange product information in real-time.

Trading partners always have the latest information in their systems, and any changes made to one company's database are automatically

and immediately provided to all of the other companies who do business with them.
The GDSN uses the GS1 system based upon the Global Trade Identification Number (GTIN). GDSN connects data pools to the

GS1 Global registry a global yellow pages directory operated by GS1 GDSN, Inc.

Global data synchronization (GDS) is an ongoing business process that enables continuous exchange of data between trading partners to ensure synchronized information. GDS is based on a publish/subscribe model. The supplier is required to publish its product information to a data pool, and the data pool then matches the published data to the known subscribers of the data. The product information can be about price, party, and other relationship-specific attributes. This process ensures that all stakeholders for a product are notified about the latest information about the product.

GDS uses a global network called the Global Data

Synchronization Network (GDSN)

It facilitates the synchronization of item information

between retailer and suppliers by using a single global registry.

It is a single point of entry into the network for suppliers

and retailers through selected data pools.

Once connected, the trading partners can subscribe to or

publish all of their item information in a single and consistent process for all other trading partners that are connected to the GDSN.

Standards-based data exchange throughout global

supply chain,
reducing supply chain errors, providing accurate, up-

to-date and compliant with industry standards.

Traditionally, moving product data from a

vendor/supplier to a retailer/distributor -labor-intensive and error-prone -the transfer of data very slow, information likely to outdate

Due to these traditional method barriers and hurdles issues, industry groups decided to work together on new technologies such as Global Data Synchronization (GDS), To help ease and speed the transfer of product data from manufacturer to retailer, as well as to increase accuracy and security. The following figure shows the flow of product data between trading partners, data pools, and the global registry with in the GDSN.

The foundation of GDS

Product data is updated consistently between trading

partners Data is validated against standards and business rules ensuring its accuracy Trading partners classify their products in a common, standardized way Trading partners have a single point of entry through their chosen data pool, reducing the cost of using multiple vendors The uniqueness of items, such as products, cases, pallets etc., is guaranteed through the GS1 Global Registry

The key elements of GDS

Data Synchronization ensures that the recipient's

product database or catalog contains the same information as the suppliers database.
Global Standards manage how the product data is

stored and formatted.

Network allows product information to be published

by its source and subscribed to by a recipient.

Data synchronization provides an automated method

to synchronize our item information with suppliers, according to global industry standards, by utilizing the same format for all trade items and parties to improve accuracy.
Synchronizing data globally dramatically reduces time

spent manually entering and adjusting information, making it possible to focus valuable resources on your core business.

Benefits realized by adopting GDS

Standardized system for trading partners, reducing

duplicate systems and processes Reduced costs through the removal of inefficiencies and exceptions Improved on-shelf availability, resulting in increased sales Enhanced collaboration between trading partners Support of new supply chain processes, for example, home shopping or RFID

Some detailed benefits are.

Corporate Management
Simplify corporate reporting Expand geographic retailer base Eliminate IT system redundancy Create an opportunity for shared services Maximize retail exposure/product posting Reduce time spent on complaints/disputes

Category/Promotion Management
Improve visibility/stock level planning Simplify and enhance category reporting Reduce product introduction lead time Reduce product promotion lead time

Administrative Data Handling

Eliminate need for cross reference tables

Reduce invoice disputes Streamline the accounts receivable process Encounter fewer sales order defects

Logistics
Simplify order tracking

Increase percentage of accurate orders

Reduce return shipments Encounter fewer emergency orders Improve picking accuracy Optimize short-term planning Maximize truckloads

What is IMAGE PROCESSING

Method to convert an image into digital form and perform

some operations on it, in order to get an enhanced image or to extract some useful information from it. video frame or photograph and output may be image or characteristics associated with that image.

It is a type of signal dispensation in which input is image, like

Usually Image Processing system includes treating images as

two dimensional signals while applying already set signal processing methods to them.

It is among rapidly growing technologies today, with its

applications in various aspects of a business. Image Processing forms core research area within engineering and computer science disciplines too.

Use in Supply chain

Image processing utilizes facsimile (fax) and optical-scanning

technology to transmit and store freight bill in-formation, as well as other supporting documents such as proof of delivery receipts (POD) or bills of lading (BOL). information is almost as important as delivering the goods on time.

The rationale for this service is that timely customer shipment

As freight is delivered to customers, support documentation is

sent to image processing locations, electronically scanned, and logged into the system. central data base where they are stored. By the next day, customers can access the documents through computer linkages or a phone call to their service representative.

Electronic images of the documents are then transmitted to a

Customer requests for a hard copy of a document can be

filled within minutes by a facsimile transmission.

Customer benefits include more accurate billing, faster

response from carrier personnel, and easy access to documentation.

The carrier also benefits because the system eliminates the

need to file paper documents, reduces the chance of loss and provides improved credibility with customers.
Satellite technology, RF and image processing require

substantial capital investment prior to achieving significant returns.

Experience has shown, however, the primary benefit of

these communication technologies is not always lower cost but improved customer service.
Improved service is provided in the Form of more

timely and accurate order entry, quicker shipment tracing. and faster transfer of sales and inventory information.
There will be increased demand for these

communication technology applications as customers observe the competitive benefits of real-time information transfer.

Industrial application of Image Processing In context with Supply Chain

Intelligent Transportation Systems This technique

can be used in Automatic number plate recognition and the container number or the consignment detail on the container
Moving object tracking This application enables to

measure motion parameters and acquire visual record of the moving object. The different types of approach to track an object are: Motion based tracking Recognition based tracking

Automatic Visual Inspection System This application

improves the quality and productivity of the product in the industries.

Automatic inspection of incandescent lamp filaments

This involves examination of the bulb manufacturing process. Due to no uniformity in the pitch of the wiring in the lamp, the filament of the bulb gets fused within a short duration.
In this application, a binary image slice of the filament is

created from which the silhouette of the filament is fabricated. Silhouettes are analyzed to recognize the non uniformity in the pitch of the wiring in the lamp. This system is being used by the General Electric Corporation.

Automatic surface inspection systems In metal industries

it is essential to detect the flaws on the surfaces. For instance, it is essential to detect any kind of aberration on the rolled metal surface in the hot or cold rolling mills in a steel plant. Image processing techniques such as texture identification, edge detection, fractal analysis etc are used for the detection.
Faulty component identification This application

identifies the faulty components in electronic or electromechanical systems. Higher amount of thermal energy is generated by these faulty components. The Infrared images are produced from the distribution of thermal energies in the assembly. The faulty components can be identified by analyzing the Infra-red images.
