INTRODUCTION

In areas of heavy rainfall or low soil percolation,

it is necessary to employ surface drainage
systems to get rid of surplus surface water from
the land. Commonly used surface drainage
systems include shallow ditches, open
channels, grassed waterways and sloped
banks.

GENERAL CONSIDERATION

A surface drainage system should be designed to

handle the maximum rate of surface runoff
from rain to occur at a site.

A well-designed land drainage system can

convert useless, poorly drained land to
valuable building sites or permit construction
to be carried on during extended periods of wet
weather.

GENERAL CONSIDERATION
(CONTS)

Good drainage practice can help prevent

flooding and erosion and improve the
general attractiveness of a site.

THE NEED OF SURFACE

DRAINAGE

Surface water
removed from
pavement

Eventually
discharges into
natural water
systems

Redirects water
into appropriately
designed channels

THE IMPORTANT OF
SURFACE DRAINAGE

A surface drainage is have been created by

grading an area so that water collects and flows
to a lower elevation.

Slope is the most important issue to consider.

TYPE OF SURFACE
DRAINAGE

In level areas, a collecting ditch may need to be installed

at one side of the field and shallow shaped ditches are
constructed to discharge into the collecting ditch.

Field ditches for surface drains may be either narrow with

nearly vertical sides or V shaped with flat side slopes

The pattern of ditches is regular. The method is adopted to

land that has uniform slope.

DIMENSION

THE CONSTRUCTION METHOD OF

SURFACE DRAINAGE

Levelling: Digging process to get level and width

required in drawing plan. Use appropriate tools to
digging and levelling.

Mortar placement: Use ratio 1:3 cement mortar.

U drain placement: U drain should

place above cement mortar, check
level after placement.

THE CONSTRUCTION METHOD OF

SURFACE DRAINAGE

Brick placement: Brick placement

is along u drain. Used clay brick and
common bond.

Sump: The size of sump is 600x600x600 with

grating.

Finishing: Required grating.

CONCLUSION

Drainage is the natural or artificial removal of

surface and sub-surface water from an area.

During the construction of the work on site will

set out all the necessary levels for each of the
previously mentioned factors.
