Imperialism

is the act of extending the authority of one state or people over another Usually occurs as an empire expansion

Colonialism

is the practice of acquiring full or partial political control over another state or territory, occupying it with settlers, and exploiting it economically

Beginning

in 1850, a few coastlines of Africa had been colonized by Europeans By 1914, almost all of Africa was subject to the Colonialism and Imperialism of Europe.

In

!876, King Leopold II assumed control of the Congo Basin region for its minerals. This led to the Berlin Conference in 1884.

The

Berlin Conference created a policy that regulated land ownership and trade in Africa. European countries began competing for land in Africa in what was called The Scramble for Africa.

European

countries took part in The Scramble for Africa. The activity of colonies were decided in European capitals, such as London, Paris, and Libson.

Most

of the European countries at the time (beginning in the 1880s) were involved in Imperialism and Colonialism of Africa The major contributors at the time were Britain, France, Portugal, Spain, Germany, Turkey, and Belgium.

Portugal

had long established bases in Angola Spain had small enclaves in northwest Africa at Ceuta and Melilla Ottoman Turks controlled Egypt, Libya, and Tunisia

Britain

was in control of numerous colonies in Africa. France controlled most of northwest Africa and had settlements at Dakar and St. Louis in Senegal. Other countries with land include Belgium, Germany, and Italy.

The

goals for European countries was to: Extend their power to new lands Search for more economical power Achieve prestige nationalism Obtain resources

Europe

was in search for new markets and new natural resources This led to the desire to conquer new land and take their resources

European

governments tried to gain patriotism from its citizens. They did this by having a large, powerful empire.

European

powers used steamboats and machine guns to aid them in their conquest. Had medicines like quinine for malaria. Removed political rulers

European

countries gained much of African land. Also gained a vast amount of resources. However, by the mid 1900s African countries started to become independent.
