ACTIVITIES AND MATERIALS TO ENCOURAGE LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT ,TEACHING SOUND SYSTEM, VOCABULARY, GRAMMAR AND ALL LANGUAGE SKILLS.

Nursery Rhyme (Animal Masks) Year 1, Level 1 Pupils

Set Induction
Teacher shows a magic bag(consist of farm animals pictures) to the pupils .

Teacher randomly call upon a few pupils and asks them to get the animals from the bag. Teacher gives hint on the topic they are going to learn on that day by asking What is this animal? and Where can we find it? when the chosen pupils take out the animal from the magic bag.
Teacher tells the pupils that they are going to learn about animals in the farm.

Presentation
Teacher shows a video Old Mcdonald by using a powerpoint. Teacher demonstrates how to sing the song. Teacher distributes the songs lyrics and picks a group of pupils to sing along. Teacher and all the pupils sing the song together.

Practice
Teacher distributes handouts to the pupils and asks them to answer the question. Teacher shows an example on how to answer the questions. Teacher checks the answers with the pupils.

Production
Teacher distributes animals templates to the pupils. Teacher tells the pupils that they are going to produce a masks. Teacher shows how to do the masks.

Teacher then, gives pencil colours and rubber bands for the pupils to prepare their own masks.

Teacher gets the pupils to participate in Action Song by using the song Old Mcdonald. Teacher demonstrates the actions and get a group of pupils to join her. Teacher repeats it two times and asks all pupils to do the Action Song while wearing their masks.

TO TEACH VOCABULARY
Substitution:

By using this nursery rhyme, teacher can teach vocabulary to the pupils. The lyrics Old McDonald had a farm, the word farm can be substituted.
The word farm can be substitute with other vocabulary. For example car, bicycle, pet, house or shoes

TO TEACH READING
Adaptation:

Reading can be taught to pupils by adapting the nursery rhyme into a short story. Pupils will be able to enjoy the story because they are familiar with it. For example: from Old McDonald had a farm.. it can be used as There is an Old man named McDonald. He has a farm..

TO TEACH WRITING
Reordering: Teacher can teach writing to pupils through the song. For example by reordering the lyrics in order to teach them about sentence structure. Eg: Old McDonald had a farm. had Old Mcdonald farm. a

TO TEACH GRAMMAR
Adding:

Grammar can be teach through this nursery rhyme by adding, for instance an adjective before the nouns.
For example: Old McDonald had a big farm. Apart from adjective, teacher can also use nouns, adverbs or prepositions, suitable to the text.
