Mission &Values
Our Mission:
To support, guide and embrace NICU families and staff throughout their personal NICU journeys.

We Believe:
All NICU journeys are unique.

Family members are the most important members of their childs healthcare team.
Open communication between medical staff and NICU families is fundamental to providing the best care for the baby. Sharing resources and communicating options is critical to the decision making process regarding a babys welfare. Everyone communicates and receives communication differently.

Year One Objectives


We Will:
Establish a core team of former NICU parents and current medical staff liaisons that will comprise the Advisory Council Create the infrastructure for FAC (Family Advisory Council) Create a process by which we can regularly communicate resources and suggestions to medical staff

Establish a training program for members of the FAC


Institute bylaws and rules for FAC Launch the FAC

Determine a regular meeting schedule


Select chair/co-chair and term length Create long term objectives for FAC

Activities
The Hemby NICU Family Advisory Council has been meeting since August 2013.

Planning is underway for the formal launch of the Hemby NICU Family Advisory Council at the NICU Picnic in May, 2014.

Before The Council


What was missing in your patient and family engagement efforts prior to starting the initiative?
Poor patient satisfaction scores
No clear avenue for parents to communicate feedback (positive or negative)

Limited resources for parents seeking information about the NICU

Where We Are Now


What are you doing now that is new? Is it working? How do you know?
Established Family Advisory Council
Identified Mission, Values, Objectives Volunteer Training is underway.

We are moving forward and have consistent family engagement in our council meetings.

What do you hope to do next regarding patient and family engagement?
Continue to develop a website
Focus on Patient/Family Experience, Patient Safety, Family Engagement

Involve families in our infection prevention committee, quality/safety initiatives and our shared governance council
Seek parent input to improve patient and staff satisfaction scores Get families to tell their stories to other families AND staff
