COMPARE AND CONTRAST THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING VIRTUAL AND PHYSICAL MANIPULATIVE MATERIALS IN THE TEACHING AND LEARNING COMPUTATION AMONG PRIMARY SCHOOL CHILDREN

EFFECTIVENESS ON USING VIRTUAL MANIPULATIVE MATERIALS

I. The biggest advantage of virtual manipulative is their interactive capabilities. These manipulative allow students to see mean and relationships based on the results of their actions. II. Virtual manipulative allow for changing the arrangement or representation. III. Virtual manipulative / Computer based manipulative can store and later retrieve configurations. IV. Computer based manipulative record and replay students' actions.

EFFECTIVENESS IN USING PHYSICAL MANIPULATIVE MATERIALS

I. Physical manipulative materials help student connect mathematical idea and symbol to physical object, thus the student be able to visualize abstract mathematical ideas to get better understanding. II. Manipulative materials can also be tools to help students to solve abstract mathematical problem. III. Student might using physical models to represent their thinking, so that they can move and adapt the materials as they explore possible solutions to problems.

COMPARISON
VIRTUAL MANIPULATIVE MATERIALS PHYSICAL MANIPULATIVE MATERIALS

Pictorial Less time consuming Usually require computer or internet access

Concrete Time consuming Do not require computer

Individual/ own-self work

Group work

Identify appropriate and inappropriate uses of calculator and computer in the teaching of computation among primary school children.

Appropriate
Saving devices to teach (no wasting papers or things) More pattern recognition and characterization of symbol manipulation Help teachers in the activities Uses of graph two and three-dimensional mathematical functions with the ability to animate three-dimensional graphs Using several numerical methods so the user can see how solutions vary depending upon the method Students can focus more in Mathematics strategies Students will not wasting their time or too focus on the Mathematics solution

Inappropriate
The students will lazy to calculate on their own. No mathematical thinking anymore The students will not be stimulated or challenged enough Brain will not develop because they do not think Dependent on the calculators that they will be rendered helpless without one Children will get bored easily by using the computer because they will only use their eye.
