AMTS
 History
• The Ahmedabad Tramway Company Limited was
formally set up in 1873. The Ahmedabad Municipality
was given the right to buy up the concern after the first 25
years or after every period of 7 years thereafter.
• After this contract was entered into between the
Ahmedabad Tramway Company and the Municipality, the
Government of Ahmedabad enacted the Ahmedabad
Tramways Act, 1874, under which the Company was
licenced to run a tramway service in the city.

• Ahmedabad Municipal Transport Service or AMTS

runs the public bus service in the city of Ahmedabad in
India. At present, AMTS has 1400 buses servicing the
city. The responsibility of the administration of AMTS
comes under the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation
Establish standards and methods
for measuring Performance
 Ensuring safety of the passengers
 On time arrival and departure

 Covering all major routes
 Affordable rates
 Comfortable seating and adequate standing space
 Proper emergency exit
 Cause minimal pollution
 Proper conditions of the bus stops
 Appropriate utilization of the bus space
Measure performance
 Punctuality
• The buses are not punctual most of the time.
• At times, the people have to wait for hours to get a bus.
• Incase the bus breaks down on road there aren’t any other buses
available as back-up.
i.e. If you have a bus at 2:15 and the bus doesn’t come due to any
reason then there is no back up bus for that route. So you have to
wait till 4:00 clock for the next bus to turn up as per its schedule.
• During the peak hours time, the frequency of buses is the same.
This causes a lot of trouble for the college students, the office
going people and others.
Contd…
 Ensuring safety:
• There are no fire extinguishers in any of the buses.
• The drivers drive the buses at reckless speeds despite the
increasing traffic in the city.
• The drivers do not wear safety belts while driving.

 Adhere to traffic rules

• The bus drivers do not follow the traffic rules properly.
• Even during peak hours the bus drivers drive rashly and that
makes it difficult for the pedestrians and the two wheelers who
are at times sidelined by the buses.
Contd…
 Comfortable seating and adequate standing space
• The new buses introduced by AMTS have comfortable seats as well as adequate standing space.
• The condition of the new buses is very good.
• Gradually, all the old buses are being replaced by the new buses.
 Proper emergency exits
• There should be proper emergency exits in the buses which can be used during accidents.
• The new AMTS buses do have proper emergency exits.
Contd…
 Covering all routes
• The buses must cover all the routes for the convenience of
the people.
• The AMTS buses do not cover all the routes. This causes
inconvenience to the people. Especially the senior citizens
and the handicap people.
 Bus Stops
• Bus stops are in proper conditions with appropriate roofs and
sitting arrangements so that it provides shelter to passengers
especially during monsoon.
• A list of routes at the bus stops is provided for the guidance
of the passengers.
Contd…
• Also there are adequate lighting facilities at night.
 Cheaper fares
• Recently the fares have increased which poses a problem
for the lower middle class people.
• The rates of the passes have also increased which has
caused inconvenience for the frequent travelers.
• the minimum rate is Re. 1 just to for one stop distance.
Then the next far level is Rs. 3. that makes it in-
convenient for the people who have to take connective
buses from different stops.
• However, the AMTS provides concession ticket rates for
handicap people, blind people, students and senior
citizens.
Contd…
 Cause minimal pollution
• In order to reduce pollution caused by public transport
AMTS is now using CNG buses.
• This has helped in reducing pollution to a great extent.
• Ie. The study carried out in July 2008 shows that there is
a decrease of 27% in the pollution emissions. This is due
to the use of CNG in buses and rickshaws.
Take corrective actions
 Safety measures:
• There should be provision for fire extinguisher and first
aid boxes in all the buses.
• Speed governor should be installed in the buses so that
the drivers do not drive at a speed above the permissible
speed.
• For eg. The bus tragedy the happened in June 2008.
• But still the safety measures have not been taken,
 Punctuality:
• in order to maintain punctuality, the AMTS management
should take steps such as employing supervisors at
major bus stations.
Contd…
• They are placed to check whether the buses depart as per
time continuously.
• In case of any break down of one bus, extra buses should be
available to minimize the inconvenience of the passengers.

 Fares:
• There is no uniformity in fares.
• The fares should be in accordance to the distance between
the destinations.
 Rules and regulations:
• Seat belts should be made compulsory for the drivers.
• Drivers with proper licenses should be recruited.
• The drivers should stop the buses at every bus stops.
 Other steps for controlling
• There has been a special facility for the handicap
people. There have been a low height buses that have
been started in which the wheel chairs can be directly
pushed up in the buses for the convenience.
• The checking squad have been placed at various bus
stops that check whether the buses wait at the stops,
they follow the traffic instructions and to ensure that the
buses are driven safely.
• The small buses have started for high traffic areas as it
would be convenient for them to commute on busy roads
and provide faster transportation. The new buses also
have the broader gates to avoid kiosks.
• The operating time has also been increased. The buses
now operate from morning 5 am to night 1 pm.

 Helpline
AMTS had planned to start a helpline service that would
benefit the people in many ways like information
regarding the schedule of the buses, in case of any
emergencies, regarding their feedback and complaints.

AMTS has been making considerable profits right now.

But it can still improve the facilities that it provides and
revise the ticket rates.
