What is Information?
Information is data presented in a form that is meaningful to recipients Data becomes information when they are transformed to communicate meaning or knowledge, ideas and conclusions. By itself data is meaningless.

Background
Management information systems do not have to be computerized

But with today's large, multinational corporations, computerization is a must for a business to be successful

What are Management Information Systems?

Definition: A computer system designed to help managers plan and direct business and organizational operations.

Computer-based or manual system that transforms data into information useful in the support of decision making
Davis (1974) describes MIS as an integrated, man/machine system for providing information to support the operations, management, and decision-making functions in an organization. A MIS can be defined as a system that processes information input in the form of data (the raw material) and helps support the management in decision-making and strategic planning. An 'MIS' is a planned system of the collecting, processing, storing and disseminating data in the form of information needed to carry out the functions of management

MIS functions can be classified

(1) To generate reports-for example, financial statements, inventory status reports, or performance reports needed for routine or non-routine purposes. (2) To answer what-if questions asked by management. For example, questions such as "What would happen to cash flow if the company changes its credit term for its customers?" can be answered by MIS. This type of MIS can be called Simulation. (3) To support decision making. This type of MIS is appropriately called Decision Support System (DSS). DSS attempts to integrate the decision maker, the data base, and the quantitative models being used.

Example: Data warehouse/DSS

Purpose establish a MIS

To ensure quick public service To reduce Corruption To establish transparency To increase work efficiency To reduce data input time To reduce data processing time To reduce huge output time To increase accountability of every personnel To information backup To establish efficient auditing

Components of MIS
Hardware Input and output devices constitute the hardware components of MIS

Software The programs and applications that convert data into machine-readable language are known as software
C++, java, developer 6i,Visual basic, Adobe illustrator, photoshop etc

Procedures Procedures are sets of rules or guidelines, which an organization establishes for the use of a omputer-based information system Personnel The computer experts, managers, users, analysts, programmers, database managers, and many other computer professionals who utilize the computer-based information systems are the personnel in a management information system Database

A success story of
The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act aims at enhancing the livelihood security of people in rural areas by guaranteeing hundred days of wageemployment in a financial year to a rural household whose adult members volunteer to do unskilled manual work. 11 Crore Job Cards and over 4 Crore Muster Rolls have been made available on the MIS Successful implementation of MGNREGA seriously depends on the establishment and operationalization of a proper computer based Management Information System (MIS) that interconnects all the Gram Panchayats, Blocks, Districts, States and the Union Ministry through an ICT network.
