Instruct me to use proper adjectives That I can apply to laud masses Also adverbs to describe actions Not to dilapidate but to refine reputations I wish to connect others and make them friends As conjunctions do in connecting sentences To be a preposition of Your omnipresence And brag to others Your omnipotence. What is Epic Poetry?

An epic is a long narrative poem that relates the great deeds of a larger-than-life hero who embodies the values of a particular society.

Two Types of Epics

1. Folk Epic
oral compositions passed on
from storyteller to storyteller and has changed over time.

2. Literary Epic

written compositions that are

unchanged over time.

FEATURES OF AN EPIC POEM

1. Plot centers around a hero of unbelievable stature 2. Involves deeds of superhuman strength and valor 3. Vast setting 4. Involves supernatural and-or otherworldly forces 5. Poet remains objective and omniscient

CHARACTERISICS OF AN EPIC POEM

1. Characters are beings of national importance and historical or legendary significance. 2. The setting is grand in scope, covering nations, the world, or even the universe. 3. The hero does great deeds in battle or undertakes an extraordinary journey or quest. 4. Supernatural forces interest themselves in human action and often intervene directly.

ANALYSIS
After watching of Beowulf, what would you say
were the qualities deeply esteemed by the people of those times? Would these qualities be esteemed in our times? Beowulf was a good leader. What qualities would you demand from a national leader? What quality/qualities of Beowulf would be worthy of emulation by ordinary citizens? What does the story of Beowulf reveal about the customs and beliefs of the Danes in that period? Why is the focus of the story on Beowulf as a hero rather than as a king? What is the difference?
