*ometimes a person who is suffering from chronic pain requires surgery. +he reason for surgery may or may not be related to the chronic pain problem. For e ample, a person with low, bac# pain or someone with chronic pelvic pain may need an operation to remove their gall bladder. +here has been very little research in this area but people who have chronic pain may be at ris# for developing more intense acute pain after surgery than patients who do not have chronic pain. +hese patients may require e tra care from the &P* team in helping them manage the pain. In particular, psychologists can be helpful to these patients who are especially vulnerable and in need of support, encouragement and understanding. Consultation with or referral to a registered psychologist can help guide you as to the use of these therapies.
