BACKGROUND OF THE COMPANY

Manufacturing activities of Tata Steel


Integrated steelworks is a place where raw steel is manufactured from raw materials, which include iron ore, lime and coke. Raw steel production- Minimills are relatively compact steel plants in which raw steel is produced by melting recycled steel scrap in electric arc furnaces. Refractory materials are an essential part of installations to produce steel.

Automotive- Highly demanding market Building and Construction- Tata Steel provides a wide range of materials and half-products for the construction sector, which is the largest market for Tata Steel Packaging- One of the main markets of Tata Steel Transport & Engineering- Tata Steel supplies steel based materials to several non-automotive transport sectors

CSR Activities
The Tata Steel Group's focus in the area of corporate sustainability includes Social Sustainability, Environmental Sustainability, Social Welfare, Sport, and Inclusive Growth Social Sustainability Committed to make a positive contribution to society in a number of ways Creating employment is a first step in creating social sustainability By the end of March 2008, in Europe, the Tata Steel Group had directly employed 41,200 people - and thousands more indirectly through contractors and suppliers

Healthcare initiatives Tata Steel continued to provide curative, promotive and preventive healthcare services to improve levels of health amongst the community. During the course of the year, approximately 1,45,600 persons from both urban slums and remote, rural areas were treated by the companys mobile medical units Tata Steel also organized the 13th Lifeline in Joda to reach out to remote villages. Recognising the need for having well stocked blood banks for emergencies, the Tata Steel Rural Development Society collected 1312 units and conducted 14 blood donation camps during the year.

Giving back to the community NatSteel (NSA), in its Singapore operations has taken vigorous initiatives in the area of social and health care. The Singapore headquarters has always played an active role in giving back to the community. Includes blood donation drives, ensuring the emotional wellbeing of senior citizens through various social initiatives etc. Company presented a cheque of USD 50,000 each to adopted charities to the Society for the Physically Disabled (SPD) and St Joseph's Home (SJH).

Environmental Sustainability In its Indian operation, Tata Steel has continued its efforts towards environment care. Committed to addressing climate change issues, Tata Steel in India has successfully brought down carbon dioxide emissions to 2.04 t/tcs in 2007-08 from a level of 2.13t/tcs in 2006-07. Towards Pollution Control Tata Steel has been an enthusiastic participant in the Steel Task Force initiatives of Asia Pacific Partnership on Clean Development and Climate under the aegis of Ministry of Steel, Government of India. During the past year, solid waste utilisation has been improved to 86%.

It is an important aspect of Tata Steel's environment policy In its efforts to prevent environmental degradation, Tata Steel has also encouraged the development of renewable and non-polluting sources of energy in the rural areas. 25,000 saplings were planted during the year 21 solar street lights and 255 solar home lights were installed and 110 bio-gas plants were created
NatSteel, across its operations in Australia, China, Vietnam, Thailand and Singapore has also undertaken several initiatives toward environment care 90% of the steel is recycled, instituting 'green buildings' with energy saving solutions, various waste management programmes, purifying emissions through treatments - these are among the various initiatives being taken on a continuous basis by the NatSteel's various operations across the globe.

RURAL FOCUS
It has benefitted marginalized farmers through land and water management and agriculture extension strategies

Watershed committees were formed to build a sense of ownership among the village community. Skill development and resource building among farmers is an important part of companys strategy for rural income generation.

An important strategy in rural enterprise development is the establishment of Self Help Groups (SHGs). Training is regularly conducted to develop relevant, marketable skills within the community. The Companies Rehabilitation and Resettlement initiative has been designed to adopt all families affected by the Greenfield projects, under the 'Tata Parivar' programme.

FOCUS ON LITERACY AND EDUCATION


The Companys efforts at improving the literacy rates in the operational areas have been promising.
Affirmative Action was declared Company Policy in 2006 and this forms an important part of company's interventions in education. Tata Steel enrolled 200 rural children in camp schools during the year.

MENTORING TALENT
In keeping with Tata Steel's people policies, NSA has kick started a mentoring programme that pairs promising young talent in the company with Senior Management.
NSA is working towards the Work-Life Excellence Award which recognizes employers nation-wide who are committed to helping their employees harmonies work and personal commitments.

WELL-BEING THROUGH SPORT


Believing strongly, as it does, that sport is an activity that enables a healthy mind and body. Tata Steel has always actively encouraged and supported sport in multiple ways. It has built champions in different sports who have gone onto represent their countries.

FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE

METHODOLOGY
Its calculation on two basics Factors- profit after tax and current CSR spends. This part of the index is called Variance Score and consequently there is a Variance Rank. The overall Score is the average of Variance Score and Contribution Score. The smaller the score higher is the rank.

JUSTIFICATION
The company has a very good financial performances in the last 5 years. Where in year 2008 companys net sales were 28,48,859 and in 2012 , it was 37,94,249. Its net profit, value for equity holders has also increased significantly. The companys contribution has not remained significant in front of its fair financial. And above rating shows that it has the first rank in CSR contribution and its contribution to deficit is 4.9.
