HISTORY OF MICROSOFT
After reading the January 1, 1975 issue of Popular
Electronics that demonstrated the Altair 8800, Bill Gates
called the creators of the new microcomputer, offering
to demonstrate an implementation of the BASIC
programming language for the system. Gates had
neither an interpreter nor an Altair system, yet in the
eight weeks before the demo he and Allen developed
the interpreter. The interpreter worked at the demo and
MITS agreed to distribute Altair BASIC.
Gates left Harvard University, moved to Albuquerque,
New Mexico where MITS was located, and founded
Microsoft there.
The
name Microsoft (a portmanteau of microcomputer and
software), hyphenated in its early incarnations, was first

HISTORY OF GOOGLE From jimj jaipur
students 2009

Google began in January 1996, as a research

project by Larry Page, who was soon joined
by Sergey Brin, when they were both PhD students
at Stanford University in California. They
hypothesized that a search engine that analyzed
the relationships between websites would produce
better ranking of results than existing techniques,
which ranked results according to the number of
times the search term appeared on a page. Their
search engine was originally nicknamed "BackRub"
because the system checked backlinks to estimate
the importance of a site. A small search engine
called Rankdex was already exploring a similar
strategy.

THE MAIN ISSUE
In the past few months, the two
seem to have dug their teeth into
each other’s jugular vein.
The game is on and the two
companies are ostensibly trying to

A vast majority of Google searches are
done on PCs running Microsoft Windows
and Internet Explorer. So would Google
really gain from displacing these
products? It seems like a lose-lose
situation for both as both companies
may take eons to actually get some
moolah from their mutually-competing
product pursuits. This could trigger a
price war between them too
But going by the history of Microsoft,
no open source software be it ,open
office, linux or any other has not
even touched its supremacy in its
own domain. Google is trying what
companies like IBM and Sun
Microsystems have tried and failed at
doing. It appears to be to be a lose –
lose situation for both but only time
can tell what will happen of this
Yahoo and Microsoft have announced
an agreement to improve web search
for users and advertisers. After months
of speculations and many talks, Micro-
hoo has finally come to be. Microsoft
will be powering Yahoo! search with
Bing, where as Yahoo! will be the
international exclusive representative
for both companies’ premium search
advertisers. This is going to be a great
Following are the key terms of agreement:
The term of the agreement is 10 years;
Microsoft will acquire an exclusive 10 year license to Yahoo!’s
core search technologies, and Microsoft will have the ability
to integrate Yahoo! search technologies into its existing web
search platforms
Microsoft’s Bing will be the exclusive algorithmic search and
paid search platform for Yahoo! sites. Yahoo! will continue to
use its technology and data in other areas of its business
such as enhancing display advertising technology.
Microsoft will compensate Yahoo! through a revenue sharing
agreement on traffic generated on Yahoo!’s network of both
owned and operated (O&O) and affiliate sites.
Microsoft will pay traffic acquisition costs (TAC) to Yahoo!
at an initial rate of 88% of search revenue generated on
Yahoo!’s O&O sites during the first 5 years of the
agreement.
Yahoo! will continue to syndicate its existing search
Open source is an approach to the design,
development, and distribution of software,
offering practical accessibility to a
software's source code. Some consider open
source as one of various possible design
approaches, while others consider it a
critical strategic element of their operations.
Before open source became widely adopted,
developers and producers used a variety of
phrases to describe the concept; the term
open source gained popularity with the rise of
the Internet, which provided access to diverse
