Tissue Paper Hot Air Balloon

Andrea Badua Period 2 Physics Ms. Buenconsejo

Introduction

A hot air balloon is a balloon used for traveling through the air in a basket that is suspended below a large bag of heated air.

With the provided materials, the student will plan, design, and construct a hot- air balloon that will stay longer in air, and that will explain the Physics of Hot- Air Balloon.
Measure the height of the flight of the balloon and the time the hot- air balloon will stay in air.

Explain how the hot- air balloon works.

Investigate how temperature affects air density. Cite a Global issue related to the project.

Objectives/Purpose & Standard

3a. Students know heat flow and work are two forms of energy transfer between systems. 3b. Students know that the work done by a heat engine that is working in a cycle is the difference between the heat flow into the engine at high temperature and the heat flow out at a lower temperature (first law of thermodynamics) and that this is an example of the law of conservation of energy. 3c. Students know the internal energy of an object includes the energy of random motion of the object's atoms and molecules, often referred to as thermal energy. The greater the temperature of the object, the greater the energy of motion of the atoms and molecules that make up the object. 3g. Students know how to solve problems involving heat flow, work, and efficiency in a heat engine and know that all real engines lose some heat to their surroundings.

Problem & Hypothesis

How can I make the hot air balloon

surpass at least 50 cm. in the air?

If I glue the sides shut and close the

top of the balloon, it will prevent any air from coming out of the balloon during testing, thus allowing the balloon to surpass at least 50 cm.

Materials

Tissue Paper Glue Stick Pair of Scissors Ruler Stop Watch Blow Dryer

Plan & Design

Measurements:
Height of the hot air balloon (45cm.) Width of the mid part of the hot air balloon (15cm)

Procedures

Cut 8 strips of the same pattern. Glue one side and paste. Repeat. Once everything is glued with no holes or openings turn it inside- out. Make the skirt. (gluing a strip along the bottom)

Test Flight

Data & Observation

1.What caused the differences in the results in your table? Oddly enough, the time suspended in the air varied for which I believe for no particular reason. This could be due to mishap during the time it was released. 2.How important is hot air on the balloon? Concerning the data for height, I believe that for the most part its accurate because as you can see, the longer it took to prepare the balloon to launch, the higher the balloon went up. Hot air balloons are based on a very basic scientific principle: warmer air rises in cooler air. 3.How does temperature affect the flight of the balloon: When the temperature (T) of a gas (air) inside the balloon increases the density (D) of the air inside decreases. 4.Compare and Contrast hot air and cold war. The particles/ molecules of hot air are much faster than those of cold air.
Time on Launcher (seconds) Time aloft- in air (seconds) Height (centimeters)

5s 10s 15s

1.37s 1.19s 1.28s

80cm. 110m. 116cm.

Conclusion
In conclusion, my hypothesis was correct. If there are no holes or openings and if the
balloon is light, it will be able to reach a greater distance. My balloon has exceeded my prediction of it reaching from 50cm to 116cm.

Summary & Reflection

This was both an easy and fun project to work on. My favorite part would have to be when testing it. My least would probably be gluing the sides

because I had to take caution as to not rip it. To make it more interesting, I wonder what would have been the results if I were to use cold air instead of the hot air emanating from the blowdryer. Would the results stay the same, or differ?

Physics of Hot Air Balloon

Hot air balloons can float in the air because the air inside the balloon weighs less than the air surrounding it, in the atmosphere. The air inside a hot air balloon is heated by burning a gas to heat the air, which is forced into the balloon. Therefore when the temperature (T) of a gas (air) inside the balloon increases the density ( D ) of the of the air inside decreases. The gases both inside and out the balloon are the same, the Ideal Gas Law can be used (first law of thermodynamics)

Global Relevance
Hot air balloons are able to take off in the sky

due to the heat source of a burning gas. The hot air is released and the smoke causes pollution. Pollution not only affects people, but also nature. It will make the people ill and when the plants take in oxygen, it wont be clean. I suppose its a good thing not often will people use hot air balloons for means of transportation.

Safety Lab Rules

Do not run with scissors.

No horse- play while other students are
working on their projects.

Wear gloves while testing air balloon so you

wont burn your hands.
