Definition of Means of Egress


It refers to the ability to exit the structure, primarily in the event of an

emergency, such as fire. Three Parts of Means of Egress

SECTION 10.2.5.2 GENERAL PROVISIONS


Minimum Width
The width of any means of egress shall not be

less than 915 mm

buildings protected throughout by an approved supervised automatic sprinkler system, the minimum separation distance between two exits or exit access shall not be less than one-third (1/3) the length of the maximum overall diagonal dimension of the building

HEADROOM
Minimum headroom of a means of egress is 2 meters in

height, nor any part of the ceiling must be lower than 2 meters in height

DOOR WIDTH
Door openings of means of egress must not be less than

71 cm if a single or a pair of doors is provided No single door shall exceed 122 cm in width.

Exterior Ways of Exit Access

An exterior way of exit access shall be arranged

so that there are no dead-ends in excess of 6 m in length. A permanent, reasonably straight path of travel must be maintained over the required exterior way of access. Access to an exit may be by means of any exterior balcony, porch or gallery

SECTION 10.2.5.4 STAIRS

Where the total occupant load of all storeys

served by the stair is fewer than 50, the minimum width clear of all obstructions shall be nine hundred fifteen millimeters (915 mm)

CURVED STAIRS
Curved stairs shall be permitted as a component in a

means of egress, provided that the depth of tread is not less than two hundred eighty millimeters (280 mm) at a point three hundred five millimeters (305 mm) from the narrowest end of the tread

SPIRAL STAIRS
Riser heights shall not exceed one hundred eighty

millimeters (180 mm). The stairway shall have a tread depth of not less than two hundred eighty millimeters (280 mm) The turn of the stairway shall be such that the outer handrail is at the right side of descending users.

Seating, Aisles and Railings Rows of seats from back to back shall be not less than 83 cm. There shall be a space of not less than 30 cm from the back of one seat and the front of the seat immediately behind it. The fasciae of boxes, balconies and galleries shall have substantial railings not less than 66 cm high above the floor.

Seating, Aisles and Railings Rows of seats between aisles shall have not more than 14 seats. Rows of seats opening onto an aisle at one side only shall have not more than 7 seats. 60 seats or more: shall be not less than 915 mm when serving seats on one side only and not less than 122 cm when serving seats on both sides

Seating, Aisles and Railings The gradient of sloping aisles shall not exceed 12.5%. Steps shall not be placed in aisles unless the gradient exceeds 12.5%.

Not less than two separate exits shall be provided on every storey. Not less than two separate exits shall be accessible from every part of

every storey. A single means of egress shall be permitted in a Class C mercantile occupancy, provided that the travel distance to the exit or to a mall does not exceed 23 m. If provided with sprinkler system, it may be extended to 30 m.

SECTION 10.2.13.1 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS


Sub-classification of Occupancy
Class A. AII stores having gross area of 2,787 sqm or more, or

utilizing more than 3 floor levels for sales purposes. Class B. All stores of less than 2,787 sqm aggregate area, but over 287 sqm. Class C. All stores of 278 sqm or less gross area used for sales purposes on the street floor only. -Gross area shall be the total of all floors used for mercantile purpose only. Storage areas are not counted.

Arrangement of Exits In no case shall aisle be less than 80 cm in clear width. In Class A stores, in an open mall , at least 1 aisle of one and 1.5 m minimum width shall lead directly to an exit.

Discharge from Exits The distance of travel from the termination of the enclosure to an outside street door is-not more than 15.5 m.

Covered Malls and Walkway
Every covered mall shall have no less than 2 exits located remote

from each other. Every mall shall be provided with unobstructed exit access. In no case shall an exit access through a covered mall be less than 3 meters and 66 cm in clear width.

Number of Exits Any business occupancy not exceeding 3 storeys, and not exceeding an occupant load of 30 people per floor, shall be permitted a single separate exit to each floor, provided that the following criteria are met: This arrangement shall be permitted only where the total travel distance to the outside of the building does not exceed 30 m and where the exit is enclosed.

Arrangement of Means of Egress
Limitations on common path of travel shall be in accordance with the following:
Common path of travel shall not exceed 30 m in a building protected

throughout by an approved, supervised automatic sprinkler system Common path of travel shall not exceed 30 m within a single tenant space having an occupant load not exceeding 30 persons. In buildings other than those complying above, the common path of travel shall not exceed 23 m.
