Why WE need to help.

Somalia

The Big Idea

Somalia needs our help due to an oppressive government, recent famines, and poor, diseased, and malnourished families.
This...

is a problem.

Why is Somalia in this Situation?

Somalia's government has been unstable throughout its history o Controlled by tribes, Britain, Italy, Islamic extremist groups Land is not ideal for living as it is desert Recently experienced the worst famine the country has seen in 17 years

Suppressed by their own people.

Suppressed by their environment.

How Has it Affected the people?

4 million people, including 2 million children, are in need of immediate food security and livelihood assistance 30% of children below 5 years of age are acutely malnourished o 75% of those 30% live in South Somalia

Sickness...

During the first 2 weeks of October, more than 906 measles cases have been reported o 711 of those are cases of children below 5 years of age o 20 deaths have occurred due to measles There are 1,206 reported malaria cases o 706 of those cases are of children below 5 years of age o 6 deaths have occurred due to malaria

How they are being helped:

United Nations International Childrens Emergency Fund, or UNICEF, is partnering with local authorities and over 100 national and international partner organizations to aid the people of Somalia.

The government of Somalia, however, limits the amount of humanitarian assistance that can be done.
Bruno Geddo, the UN refugee agency UNHCR's Somalia representative, said people still arriving in Dolow feared more fighting, a bad harvest, and forced military recruitment and taxation by insurgents. o "They tell us either you give up a camel, or you give up a child, or you have to pay thousands of dollars to the militants."
