AFS PHILIPPINES

AFS Statement of Purpose


AFS is an international, voluntary, non-governmental, non-profit organization that provides intercultural learning opportunities to help people develop the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to create a more just and peaceful world.

AFS Core Values and Attributes


AFS enables people to act as responsible global citizens working for peace and understanding in a diverse world. It acknowledges that peace is a dynamic concept threatened by injustice, inequity and intolerance.
AFS seeks to affirm faith in the dignity and worth of every human being and of all nations and cultures. It encourages respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms without the barriers of race, sex, language, religion or social status. AFS activities are based on our core values of dignity, respect for differences, harmony, sensitivity and tolerance.

2008- The German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) started a new volunteer service program to foster volunteer service abroad.
The program is called Weltwarts, literally means towards the world.

The idea behind the volunteer service is the successful formula of learning by serving and its aims are two fold: - To achieve added developmental valie for the partner projects in terms of help towards self-help, and - To spark new interest in development issues in Germany.

Participants Profile
Must have passed their 18th and not yet reached their 29th birthday when signing a contract for the program. Men and women are eligible alike German citizens or right of residence in Germany Open-minded, eager to learn, team players who are interested in culture and conditions in developing countries, prepared to work hard and with dedication in the country to which they are sent Completed a vocational training course or graduated from secondary school or similar. Good basic knowledge of a language spoken in the host country. Participate in all components and events that make up the special training programme for volunteers. Be prepared to get actively involved in development policy activities before, during and after their assignment abroad.

2008- MOU was signed between AFS-Philippines and Gawad Kalinga 2009- The first Weltwarts Volunteer was hosted in the Philippines 2010- The number of Weltwarts participants in the Philippines increased to three (3)

2011- AFS Philippines is expecting six (6) Weltwarts volunteers

ACCOMMODATIONS, FOOD AND LOCAL TRANSPORTATION


Participant will be hosted by a host family residing outside of the GK

Village. It is necessary that the participant, although will not be hosted in the village be assigned to a family in the GK community. This is to provide support for the participant while in the area. Participant will have to be in the GK Village 8:00 am- 5:00 pm. In case of special events during the weekend, participant may opt to attend. Participant may be invited for overnight activities inside the GK village upon the approval of the host family, GK village, and the AFS national office. Participant will be provided meals by their host family. They can bring pack lunch when in the GK village. Participant is responsible for his/her expenses. Participant will be provided transportation from his host familys house to project site. He/she may also learn how to take public transportion.

ALCOHOL
Obey the laws of the Host Country Host Family approval needed before drinking Abusive alcohol use might result in an Early Return

Smoking
Smoking is not allowed. The rule is being mandated by AFS International

Travel
Independent travels outside of community :
Self-organized trips from the participant require the permission of the AFS National Office, Sending Country, Host Family, GK village and Natural Parents . Travels are only allowed 3 months after arrival.

Travel
AFS participants are not tourists and are not considered fully independent to travel alone. Traveling with visiting natural family, relatives or friends is not allowed

An authorized adult must accompany on any overnight travel.


Accomplish Travel Waiver and Travel Request Form. Visits by natural family, relatives and friends are discouraged, as these can be very disruptive.

SPORTS

A waiver is needed if participants desire to be involved in all kinds of outdoors and extreme sports and activities (i.e. surfing, rock/wall climbing, bungee jumping, sky diving and the like).

MEDICAL EXPENSES

AFS participants are covered by the AFS Insurance. Medical Expenses will be reimbursed.
