What is cancer?

Is a term used for diseases in which abnormal cells divide

without control and are able to invade other tissues. Cancer
cells can spread to other parts of the body through the blood
and lymphatic systems (metastasize).
Classifica
tion describes
This classification
the type of tissue in which the
cancer cells begin to develop.

• Adenocarcinoma - originates in
tissue
• Glioma – glial tissue
• Carcinoma– epithelial tissue
• Leukemia– blood cells
• Lymphoma– lymphatic tissue
• Myeloma– bone marrow
• Sarcoma– connective tissue
Most cancers are named for
the organ or type of cell in
which they begin.
Glioblastoma Multiforme
(GBM) are 35% brain cancer,
according to the OMS
statistics. Those are the
primary and more frequent
tumors of the Central
Nervous System (CNS).
NANOMEDICINE AND
CANCER
Nanotechnology has
been applied in all
therapeutic areas of
medicine.
The most extensive
investigations are in
cancer.
Nanoparticles can
deliver chemotherapy
drugs directly to tumor
cells and then give off a
signal after the cells are
destroyed. Drugs
delivered this way are
• The treatment of Central Nervous
System (CNS) is difficult due to the
Blood Brain Barrier (BBB) cross.

• Only low molecular weight

molecules, liposolubles, and any
peptidic compounds cross the BBB.

MECHANISM

Passive diffusion or specific

Local application or direct tumor injection of
cytotoxic drugs has been proposed as a
technique to use 100% .
Systemic exposure and non-target organ
toxicity is minimized
