Norms are the expectations and rules by which a culture guides the behavior of its members in any

given situation.
If you are planning to come to U.S, it is very important to know the cultural norms of the United

States, so that you won't get into any serious troubles.


In fact it helps you understand Americans more quickly and assists in your career growth.

Folkways
A folkway is a norm for everyday behavior that people follow for the sake of convenience or tradition.

Mores
A more is a norm based on morality, or definitions of right and wrong.

Laws
A law is a norm that is written down and enforced by an official agency. Violating a law results in a specific punishment.

Taboos
A taboo is a norm that society holds so strongly that violating it results in extreme disgust. The violator is often considered unfit to live in that society.

Gender Equity
All people in the US are treated as equals. In other cultures women may fall into what is viewed as "traditional" or may be treated as second-class citizens.

Body Language
People in the US on the whole tend to speak with their bodies, such as using their hands when they speak and do not view it as distracting.

Physical Contact
Depending on the situation physical contact such as pats on the back, head or shoulders can be seen as harmless. Physical contact between men is generally reserved for greetings, which may be simply a handshake, or a hug. It is not typical to kiss on the cheek when greeting.

Public Displays of Affection


In the US it is commonplace to see people who are romantically involved hug, hug, hold hands, or have their arms around each other.

Manner of Dress
In the US people may be more casual with how they dress, especially in school settings. Americans have a tendency to be more revealing with their attire but this is not a reflection on their attitudes.

Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual & Transgender Culture


In the United States LGBT Culture is widely accepted, in fact some states in the US have passed laws allowing same-sex marriage.

Is a group people who have beliefs, behaviors and fashion that are different from the main groups within a culture or society.

Cosplay
Short for "costume play", is an activity in which participants wear costumes and accessories to represent a specific character or idea from a work of fiction. Cosplayers often interact to create a subculture centered on role play. Favorite sources include manga, anime, comic books, video games, and films. There is also a subset of cosplay culture centered on sex appeal, with cosplayers specifically choosing characters that are known for their attractiveness and/or revealing costumes.

Hippie
The hippie subculture was originally a youth movement that arose in the United States during the mid-1960s and spread to other countries around the world. The word 'hippie' came from hipster. Hippies created their own communities, listened to psychedelic rock, embraced the sexual revolution, and some used drugs such as cannabis, LSD, and magic mushrooms to explore altered states of consciousness. Hippie fashions and values had a major effect on culture, influencing popular music, television, film, literature, and the arts.

Punk
Which centres around punk rock music,

includes a diverse array of ideologies, fashions and forms of expression, including visual art, dance, literature and film. The subculture is largely characterized by anti-

views

and

the

promotion

of

individual freedom.
