Biodiesel
Renewable primary product

Definition of Biofuels
Produced from renewable biomass material Commonly used as an alternative Cleaner fuel source Much cleaner than petrol/diesel alternatives

Different types of biofuels

Bioethanol Biodiesel Biogas Biobuthanol

Biodiesel
Is an ester (more generally methyl ester) Produced from vegetable oil Rudolf Diesel originally developed its engine by means of peanut oil

Types of plants used worldwide

Biodiesel
Rapeseeds palm fruit Soybeans

Sunflower

Why Biodiesel?
Safe : nontoxic, non hazardous, non flammable Eco-friendly Renewable Reduces serious air pollutants such as particulates,CO,CO2 etc. Clean burning High Lubricity Fuel Efficiency Very low greenhouse gases Reduces need to import oil

Use of Biodiesel
1. Power : Bio-diesel offers power, fuel consumption, horsepower, torque, operation performance as conventional diesel fuel. 2. Lubricity : Bio-diesel levels below 1% can improve up to a 30% increase in lubricity. 3. Compatibility with engine components : uses high percent natural rubbers compound that improves the working of engine components. 4. Bio-diesel in cold weather : A 20% blend of bio-diesel with petro-diesel raises the freezing properties approximately 3 F to 5 F . Neat bio-diesel will being to freeze at about 25 F .

Advantages
Biodiesel fuel is a renewable energy source unlike petroleum-based diesel. An excessive production of soybeans in the world makes it an economic way to utilize this surplus for manufacturing the Biodiesel fuel. One of the main biodiesel fuel advantages is that it is less polluting than petroleum diesel. The lack of sulfur in 100% biodiesel extends the life of catalytic converters. Another of the advantages of biodiesel fuel is that it can also be blended with other energy resources and oil.

Advantages
Biodiesel fuel can also be used in existing oil heating systems and diesel engines without making any alterations. It can also be distributed through existing diesel fuel pumps, which is another biodiesel fuel advantage over other alternative fuels. The lubricating property of the biodiesel may lengthen the lifetime of engines.

Disdvantages
At present, Biodiesel fuel is bout one and a half times more expensive than petroleum diesel fuel. Another biodiesel fuel disadvantage is that it can harm rubber hoses in some engines. It requires energy to produce biodiesel fuel from soy crops, plus there is the energy of sowing, fertilizing and harvesting. Biodiesel fuel distribution infrastructure needs improvement, which is another of the biodiesel fuel disadvantages.

Rice bran oil (oil extracted from the germ and inner husk of rice) Energy plantation is feasible on unproductive land We can even look into palm oil plantations If oil price is sustained above US$ 50/bbl, then biodiesel is feasible, and will enhance energy security We save FOREIGN CURRENCY, therefore paying even slightly higher price is justified .

No current use or production of Biodiesel in Bangladesh

Summary
Biodiesel is an alternative fuel for diesel engines that can be produced from renewable materials. Biodiesels advantages include lower black smoke and particulate emissions. Biodiesels disadvantages include high cost and higher harmful emissions. The health effects of biodiesel use are superior to those from diesel exhaust. Biodiesels impact on energy security is limited by the available supply.
