2 Divisions (Anthropologists)
1.) Material culture consists of objects (such as dress, art, religious artifacts or eating utensils.) 2.) Non-material culture consists of beliefs, culture, language & social institutions.
Characteristics of Culture
1.) Culture is Learned it is not instinctive or innate. It is learned though life experience after birth. 2.) Culture is Taught it is transmitter from parents to children over succesive generations language is the chief vehicle of culture

3.) Culture is Social It originates and develop through the interactions of people. 4.) Culture is Adaptive Customs beliefs & practices change slowly, but they do adapt to the social environment & to the biologic & psychologic needs of people.

5.) Culture is Integrative the elements in a culture tend to form a consistent & integrated system. ex. religious beliefs & practices influence & are influenced by family organization, economic values, & health practices.

6.) Culture is Ideational means forming images or objects in the mind. *The group habits that are part of Culture are to a consisderable extend ideal norms or patterns of behavior. People do not always follow those norms. The norms of their culture may in fact be different from the norms of society as a while.
7.Culture is Satisfying
Cultural habits persist only as long as they satisfy peoples needs. Gratification Strengthens habits & beliefs. Once they no longer gratification, they may disappear.
Ethnic group is a set of individuals who share a unique cultural & social heritage passed on from one generation to another.
