AfL : also known as Formative Assessment.


OBJECTIVES : to assess students regularly in order to identify problems. To offer feedback to help overcome the problems.

Why do we need classroom assessment ?

To enhance student learning. To encourage the teacher to use a variety of methods to get feedback.

Receive feedback from teachers.

Recognise his / her strengths and weaknesses. Improve and make further progress.

Provide opportunities for students to obtain & use information about their progress towards learning goals

Plan strategies to ensure students understand the goals they are pursuing Explain the criteria required in assessing their products

AfL : Recognised as central to classroom practice


Much of what teachers & students do is described as assessment e.g. tasks given in class & questions asked prompts students to demonstrate knowledge, skills & understanding These are observed and interpreted

Judgements are made on how learning can be improved

It involves : making our expectations clear to students. setting appropriate learning outcomes. relating student performance to learning outcomes. using learning information to improve student learning.

Teachers should have the knowledge and skill to : Plan for assessment. Observe learning. Analyse & interpret evidence of learning Give feedback to students. Support students in self assessment & self - correction

Teachers should be aware of the impact of comments, marks and grades on students. Comment to be focused on the product rather than the individual. This is constructive for both learning and motivation.
