Definition:
ES deals with every issue that affects an organism It is a multidisciplinary approach It brings an appreciation of the natural world and human impacts on its integrity It is an applied science It includes components like: biology, geology, physics, engineering, sociology, health, anthropology, economics, statistics, computers and philosophy.

Scope:
Our lives are linked with our surroundings and it inevitably affects us Everything around us forms our environment and our lives depend on keeping its vital systems as intact as possible The Indian traditions and traditions around the world respect the nature and call it Mother Nature Over the past 200 years to get more resources we have used innovative technology e.g. dams, fertilizers, etc. This has led to environmental degradation Natural and non-renewable resources will soon be exhausted

Importance:
The earth has limited resources Many of these resources are misused and polluted e.g. Water Improvements will happen only if each of us begins to take actions that will help preserve the resources Productive value of nature Aesthetic/recreational value of nature Option values of nature

Prevention is better than cure Possible only through mass public awareness Can be done through:
Nature study groups Newspapers, periodicals, websites Developing a lobby for awareness of environmental issues Local movements e.g. Chipko Good civic sense Events like Environment day, Wildlife week Visiting national park or sanctuary Institutions in Environment: Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS), Mumbai World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF-I), New Delhi Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), New Delhi CPR Environmental Education Centre, Madras Centre for Environment Education (CEE) ,Ahmedabad
