Introduction
Oil and gas or hydrocarbons are the main source of energy in Indonesia; its used for powering the transportation systems, electricity turbines, industrial plants throughout Indonesian regions. Since 2004, Indonesia has become a Net Oil Importer, which means that Indonesia is no longer the net exporter of oil. In order to meet the increasing domestic demand, Indonesia cannot just depend on the imported oil.

Objective Of The Research

This research project carries two objectives, as follows: 1. To investigate and analysis the structural model and evolution of South Makassar basin. 2. To develop the petroleum system and hydrocarbon play concept in South Makassar basin.

Research Background
Rationale of the Research
Fossil fuel is still the main source of energy Indonesia as a developing country that in need for energy to grow

Currently Indonesia is a Net Oil Importer

Present Status Of The Research

South Makassar Basin is being actively explored for Hydrocarbon resources

Seepage of oil is detected, however no success discoveries following previous drillings

The Strength and Significance of the Research The strength of this research lays on it specific the structural model and its impact on the petroleum system of South Makassar basin

The significance impact of this research is to support the Indonesia energy strategy to increase the country petroleum production

Research Approach
Research Methodology and Activities: 1. Literature review

Literature review will study the present status of South Makassar basin, the proposed tectonic setting, structural model and petroleum system. 2. Data Gathering
Collecting the Seismic data, well data, gravity, and well report from Geodynamics laboratories of ITB.

Research Approach Contd

3. Structural Interpretations
This will involve structural interpretation which includes fault and seismic horizon interpretation on the seismic data using the Seismic interpretation software (SeisEarth). 4. Balance cross sections

This work is part of checking the structural model interpretation in stage 3. If the model is balanced or restorable, it means that the interpretation is valid; if its not then the structural interpretations need to be revisited. Using Structural modeling software (SKUA)

Research Approach Contd

5. Petroleum System Identification

The stage will involve identification of possible petroleum system combining information from stage1, stage 3, and well reports 6. Report writing and submission

Key Milestone of the Research

February 2011 Completion of datas gathering from the Geodynamic laboratories of ITB in Bandung, Indonesia. July 2011 Completions of balancing the structural model from stage 3 result of research activities. December 2011 Submissions of thesis

Risk of the Research

Risks Possible of technology (software) issue (Technical risk) Degree of Risks Low

Working schedule issue on the Data Gathering (Time-related risk) Possible of wrong structural interpretation (Technical risk)

Benefits Of The Research

Body of Knowledge Investigation of the structural model in the South Makassar basin will support or confirming one of the proposed tectonic settings. Public and Private Sectors Identification of the possible petroleum system will give some inputs to the oil companies exploring the basins.
