Introduction.
What do you mean by carbon footprint ? The amount of carbon emission produced through any organization. E.g. textile industry.
Why is it necessary to consider ? Impact of carbon footprint on human beings. Global warming and carbon footprint. Other green house gases. Classification of green house gases. Direct emission- from the activities of the organization control. eg:company vehicles, fuel combustion. Indirect emission- from the use of electricity. Indirect emission from product and service. e.g. employes business travels.

How is it related to textile and environment? Modern Textile industry.(raw material finished product). Use of energy, solid waste, and effluent discharge, dust, fumes.

Manufacturing stages.(fiber ,fabric, garment formation ).

Carbon dioxide contribution from of textile industry.

Two layers of carbon footprint. 1. 2. Primary footprint- directly through energy consumption. Secondary footprint- indirect carbon emission.

Worldwide emission of co2

How is it measured?
Why calculate carbon footprint? To manage the footprint and reduce the emission. To report the footprint accurately to third party. Calculate carbon footprint. Collect the data from all utility. e.g. distance travel by vehicle. Convert the fuel, electricity consumption figures to co2 by using the standard emission factor. Energy *emission factor=carbon emission unit: KgCO2 /kwh.

Factors contribute to carbon emission in textile industry:

Production by conventional techniques. Combustion of fuels, toxic chemicals and other materials. Maximum consumption of electric units, fuels while mfg. of synthetic fiber.

Evaporation of chemicals.
Recycling of garments. improper maintenance of machine. Use of max. liquor ratio machine in processing. Transportation.

Solution to reduce carbon emission:

Use the R3(REDUCE,RECYCLE AND REUSE).
Develop innovative technologies and sustainable solutions.

Energy consumption of natural and synthetic fiber.

Maximum use of renewable energy. Natural fibres have benefit to reduce carbon emission than synthetic fiber. Embodied energy used in the production of various fibres. Cotton-55 energy in MJ/Kg of fibres. Wool-63. Viscose -100. Polypropylene-115. Polyester-125. Acrylic-175. Nylon -250.

Use of low and ultra low liquor ratio of machines. Combine processing methods.(scouring bleaching). Use waste water treatment.

Strategies for reducing carbon footprint :

Eco conference standards like GOTS, REACH, Blue sign etc. GOTS: Global Organic Textile Standards Least 70% organic matter. REACH: Registration Evaluation Authorization & Restriction of chemical substances. BLUE SIGN ATUL industry, INDIA. :provides products conforming eco conformance standards DuPont US : Sorona Polymer made from agricultural feedstock

Conclusion:
It can be concluded that carbon footprint is important in our daily life. Try to protect the nature from its adverse effect. Challenges of building a more sustainable future. Growing awareness among consumers. Use environmental standards. Drive the industry towards offering consumers product. "one must care about a world one will not see".
