The Gorgons Head

The Marquis and his nephew Charles Darnay have a

conversation where Charles tells his uncle that hes going to resign everything he has and move to England. Monsieur the Marquis gets killed by a Jacques.

Two Promises

Mr. Charles Darnay is well established in England as a

French teacher. Mr. Darnay tells Dr. Manette that hes in love with his daughter Lucie Manette. He tells the Doctor how he feels about Lucie and he believes him.

A Companion Picture

This chapter is mostly about Stryer telling his friend

Sydney that hes in love with Miss Manette. However Sydney already knew it. At the end of the chapter Styver tells Sydney to look for a respectable woman.

The Fellow Delicacy

Stryver plans to take Lucie to the Vauxhall Gardens to

make his proposal the next day. Mr. Lorry persuades Stryver to not propose until he knows Lucie will accept. Later that night Mr. Lorry tells Stryver that he would have been rejected, Stryver dismisses the affair.

The Fellow of No Delicacy

Mr. Carton tells Mr. Lorry, whos a

really close friend of Doctor Manette, that hes in love with Miss Manette. Mr. Lorry doesnt believe it and even laughs of the idea and angers Sydney. However, at the end of the chapter a turning point occurs; Mr. Carton thanks Mr. Lorry about his advice.

Sydney Carton goes to Manettes house.

Sydney finds Lucie alone, and he talks to

her about his feelings for her. Before Carton leaves, he promises that he would be willing to give his life for her or anyone close to her.

Jerry Cruncher sits on his stool outside of Tellsons and

sees Robert Clys funeral procession approaching. Jerry goes out, saying he is going to go fishing in the middle of the night, and his son follows him out to see what he is really doing out of suspicion. Jerry goes down to the river and opens a coffin. Jerrys son runs home with the nightmarish image of a coffin chasing him. The next morning, Young Jerry asks his father what a Resurrection-Man is, and says hed like to be one when he grows up.

There is an unusual amount of early drinkng in the

Defarges wine shop. Monsieur Defarge comes in with a road mender named Jacques. The road mender is asked to leave, and Defarge confers with the other Jacques characters. One Jacques expressed uncertainty about the safety and secrecy of their register, but Defarge claims that his wife knits it using symbols that no one but herself understands. The two Defarges take the road mender to see Versailles.

A policeman tells Monsieur Defarge that there may be

an English spy stationed in Saint Antoine named John Barsad. Barsad tries to trick her into complaining about poverty or about Gaspards execution. It becomes clear that Gaspard is the prisoner. Monsieur Defarge enters the wine shop and denies that the village shows sympathy to Gaspard. The spy tries to tell the Defarges that he knows about Doctor Manette. He reveals that Darnay is the nephew of Monseigneur.

One Night

Its the eve of Lucies marriage to Darnay. Doctor Manette finally began to put his imprisonment behind him While he was imprisoned he pondered what type of person Lucie would turn out to be Doctor Manette is happy to see the type of person Lucie is Later that night Lucie travels to Doctor Manettes room

Nine Days

Doctor Manette and Darnay converse before going to

the church for the wedding Doctor Manette leaves the room life-lessly pale Darnay and Lucie are married and leave for there honeymoon Ms.Pross and Mr.lorry find Dr.Manette in an incoherent state at his shoemarker bench He might not be able to join the newlyweds on their honeymoon, they keep a watchful eye over him

An Opinion

Dr.Manette recovers from his now-ended relapse, he

suggests that it wont happen again Dr. Manette says not to take his tools away Dr. Manette agrees to give up his tools to Mr. Lorry for Lucies sake Dr. Manette then joins Lucie and Darnay Mr. Lorry and Ms. Pross destroy the shoemaker bench and bury all the tools

A Plea

When Lucie and Darnay return home from there

honeymoon Sydney is there first visitor Sydney gives a speech pleading for there friendship After Sydney leaves, Darnay tells Lucie that Sydney is careless and reckless Lucie tells Darnay hes being difficult, Darnay promises Lucie he will show sympathy towards the subject.

Echoing Footsteps

Summary/Brief Analysis
Years go by and Lucie has a daughter who she names

Lucie, she also has a son but he died at a young age. Despite the death of her son she stays strong as she feels satisfied with her life. In France the French Revolution begins the prison Bastille is attacked by revolutionaries lead by the Defarges. Many wealthy upper class French people have began to send their money and assets to England.

The Sea Still Rises

Summary/Brief Analysis
A upper class man named Foulon became a target for

the revolutionaries, he insults the poor by stating that if the peasants ate grass they wouldnt be starving. Foulon fakes his own death but is later captured he is hanged three times as the first two times failed(the rope broke). The Revolutionaries beheads him, puts his head on a spike, and fill his mouth with grass.

Fire Rises

Summary/Brief Analysis
A fellow revolutionary meets up with another

revolutionary and discusses the direction of a infamous aristocrats(murdered Marquis)chateau. The men head to the Chateau and set it on fire a loyalist of the Marquis rides to a group of soldiers and requests assistance, none is given. Gabelle a tax collector for the Marquis is nearly killed, he takes refuge on the rooftop of his house from which he sees the burnings of the Chateau and many other Buildings.

Drawn to the Loadstone Rock

Summary/Brief Analysis
Mr. Lorry is told to secure any assets that belonged to Tellson

Bank in France. Darnay warns Mr. Lorry about the dangers of France, Lorry agrees to bring a bodyguard, Jerry Cruncher. Lorry gets a letter sent to the Marquis St. Evremonde, he is instructed to deliver it to the Marquis, Darnay says that he knows the Marquis; to hide his identity, he says that he will see to it that it will be safely delivered. Darnay opens the letter and finds out that Gabelle the tax collector is asking the new Marquis to come to France to save him from the Revolutionaries. Darnay is determined to go save Gabelle and leaves a letter behind for his wife and his father in law.

In Secret

As Darnay travels through France he is frequently stopped

and questioned. Eventually when he arrives in France is captured and placed in a prison called La Force. The Prison guards hands over Darnay to the Wine Merchant Defarge they converse, Defarge asks why Darnay came to France, Darnay answers by asking Defarge for assistance, Defarge declines. Darnay is put back into prison this time into a cell that measures five paces by four and a half, which may hint that he has arrived to Tower 105 at the Bastille prison!
