CONSTRUCTION PROJECT MANAGEMENT

DEFINITION: Construction Project Management is the overall planning ,

coordination and control of a project from inception to completion aimed at meeting a clients requirements in order to produce a functionally and financially viable project. NEED FOR CPM: Construction is the second largest economic activity after agriculture in India. Construction project management plays a vital role in India as 65% of total investment is done on construction projects.

FUNCTIONS OF CPM
Specifying project objectives and plans including

delineation of scope , budgeting etc. Maximizing resource efficiency. Proper coordination and control. Developing effective communication and mechanisms.

BENEFITS OF CPM
Serve as an objective.
Centralize communication. Advise the client in various aspects.

Enhance quality control.

Provide realistic and reliable budgets. Optimize and accelerate the design and construction

schedule. Provide management expertise.

OBJECTIVES OF PRESENT STUDY

To calculate the Resource requirements. To estimate the duration of the project using MS Projects. To carry out Resource allocation and leveling using MS

Projects. To construct Work Breakdown Structure(WBS) using MSP. To ascertain the cash flow of the project on monthly basis and activity basis. To obtain critical path & determine different floats for the activities of the project. To reschedule the project considering delay by Time Impact Analysis(TIA) method.

LITERATURE STUDY
SCHEDULE DELAY ANALYSIS IN CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS:A

CASE STUDY USING TIA METHOD BY-SONGUL DAYI OBJECTIVE : Construction schedule delays in project can cause major problems for contractors and owners resulting costly disputes , controversial issues and adverse relationship between all the project participants. CONCLUSION : According to TIA schedule delay analysis the delays due to critical activities of the considered project extended by 57days in totality that is by 15.4% of the estimated construction period on the other hand delays due to the non-critical activities did not impact the total duration. The reason for selecting the TIA method was that it can display the progress of construction work step by step.

SCHEDULING
Scheduling means putting the plan on a calendar

basis. It determines the commencement and termination dates of each activity. It indicates the critical and non-critical activities. It helps in using optimum resources and working within resource constraints. In general it is time table for the project. Commonly Critical Path Method(CPM) is used for scheduling.

DELAY ANALYSIS OBJECTIVE

The main objective is to apply the most appropriate

schedule delay analysis to the case study project in order to analyze the net impact of construction delays on project completion duration and to allocate responsibility amongst the project participants for such delays.

CAUSES FOR DELAY

Shortage of materials
Financial difficulties Organizational deficiencies

Delay in design works

TYPES OF DELAYS
a) Critical or non-critical
b) Excusable or non-excusable c) Compensable or non-compensable

d) Concurrent or non-concurrent

EFFECTS OF DELAY
Handing over of construction site
Work permits from municipal corporation Problems in concreting the ground floor

Unforeseeable weather conditions

Problems in masonry

MS PROJECTS
MSP,MSOP or WinProj is a software program

developed and marketed by Microsoft. It assists a project manager in developing a plan. It assigns resources to tasks. It tracks progress of a project. It ,manages the budget of the project.
