Air Traffic Expert System

Introduction
Use of airways and navigational fixes to form fixed routes in the sky is central to modern-day air traffic control. Fixed routes, however, limit efficiency and airspace capacity in comparison to paths that are not constrained or predefined. The solution? Air Traffic Expert System Air traffic expert system will automate rudimentary air traffic control planning and decision-making functions.

What it does?
The expert system receives input data representing the altitude and heading of all aircraft in the control area. The aircraft data is compared with the data of the other aircraft. Sequencing and local flow control is optimized and if a potential conflict arises between two aircraft, clearances are transmitted to the aircraft to resolve the conflict. The aircraft data is also compared with a knowledge base of air traffic control rules for the particular airport involved. An inference engine written an AI language allows real time access to the knowledge base. The position and heading of each aircraft is monitored and controlled until turned over to the tower for final approach

What it is used for?

To assist the air traffic controllers in planning and control of the air traffic flow To make possible provisions of preferred routes To foresee the conflicts in the flight timetables To know the meteorological information processing subsystem To generate strategies for preventing eventual conflicts

Who are the users?

Pilots Staffs in the control tower Air traffic controller

Uses of Air Traffic Expert System

Make routing/scheduling decisions, Analyze effects of some safety policy decisions. Incorporate safety metric into strategic vision. Objectively communicate safety issues within and between organizations.

AIs Contribution of the project

Flight plan generation Flow control during the operational aspects of flight Real time conflict resolution Prediction and detection of severe weather conditions.

Advantages/Benefits of the project

Apply to all risk categories. Customizable to different safety environments. Adapt to technological and procedural changes in airline environments. Use data and expert judgments in a unified model. Good for complex problems where humans dont have expert knowledge Issues.

Drawbacks of Air Traffic Expert System

Information Overload Danger of being misinterpreted Traffic controller can get too much dependent on the system Risk that data is incorrectly analyzed, can put entire plane in danger Changing nature of work, leading to some job loss

Conclusion
AI has contributed enormously in this field, without AI, scheduling would have been almost impossible which could have led to disasters like collision between planes.
