What is STIGMA?
This refers to the way individual or groups feel when they experience judgments, ridicule, isolation and blame among others on the basis of their HIV status. It is a result of discrediting individuals in the eye of others.

In school alone, process of stigmatization is widely experienced by many children by simply being picked-on (panunukso) which is an end result of bullying by many. Children, commonly unsupervised by their teachers are already leading a complicated school life because of these negative experiences brought by their classmates. Cases of drop outs, emotional disturbance, parent-child conflicts, social withdrawal and many others were some of the disturbing effect that many of us fail to recognize.

What is STIGMA?
Stigma can lead to depression, withdrawal and feeling of worthless. Some common things people do that stigmatize those living with HIV are;
Naming names or calling them names Denying them of their opportunities and rights Not giving them care and support Harassing

What is DISCRIMINATION?
This is when individuals or groups are being treated unfairly. It occurs when a distinction is made against a person thats results in his or her being treated unfairly and unjustly on the basis of their belonging, or perceived to belong to a particular group.

Because of the stigma associated with HIV/AIDS, and the discrimination that may follow from this, the rights of people living with HIV/AIDS and their families are frequently violated. Around the world, there have been numerous instances of such HIV/AIDS related discrimination.

People with (or believe to have) HIV/AIDS have been:
Segregate in schools and hospitals Refused employment Denied to right to marry Denied for VISAS or entry permission Rejected by their communities KILLED

Each example above offers an illustration of individual and social stigma being acted upon and, as a result, discrimination taking place.

What is DISCRIMINATION?
Stigma and discrimination also has lot to do with the increasing number of cases of HIV/AIDS. This action leads many people living with HIV/AIDS go in hide, it forbids them for medical check-up due to the fear that medical facilities will not accept them or will reject them. As a result, many of them die alone without being glimpsed by caring individuals who are very willing to attend to their needs.

What is DISCRIMINATION?
Because of stigma, people who think they are infected or carrying the virus will just ignore the need for blood screening test and as a result, this group of people may infect others either by sharing injectable drugs or unprotected sexual activities. HIV/AIDS will never be solved by symposium, pep talks and other info dissemination without uprooting the fear of many, stigma will kill any caring person and discrimination will only lead many in chaos.

What is DISCRIMINATION?
Stigma and discrimination are both leading to violation on the rights of every people. Some human rights relevant to HIV/AIDS are;

The right to non discrimination The right to work The right to education The right to information The right to privacy The right to receive treatment The right to be protected against cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment

What is DISCRIMINATION?
As a peer educator, it is our role to guide others, foster a caring environment for the people living with HIV/AIDS and lead others by example in conquering stigma and discrimination.

How can we support PLHIV?


provide a friendly caring environment give emotional support provision of an effective referral system for services intensifying our homecare services support the local and national legislations related to the positive well being of people living with HIV/AIDS support the World AIDS Day campaign support the HIV/AIDS advocacy program
