Question 5

How did you attract/address your audience?

What gender are you?

7 6 5 4 3 2 1 0 Male Female

Out of the 10 people we asked, it was important to target both males and females as our target audience was not specific to one gender. This allowed us to see how either genre was impacted by our film product. Although, The Wanderers is a film based on children , we wanted to focus on a male target audience a little more than female, as the research of our genre showed many films included quite masculine ideologies and representations which therefore attract a male audience. As much as we wanted to abide by this, it was important to consider the larger amount of consumers we would have if the film wasnt so gender specific. The opening sequence of our film supports the fact our film isnt gender specific as all four main characters are both female and male, however there are 3 boys and 1 girl. This was to

7 6 5 4 3 2 1 0 12-13 years old

How old are you?

14-15 years old

16-17 years old

18+ years old

As our film certification was confirmed 12A by the BBFC guidelines, it was important to make sure that that demographic was the main age group that was answering the questions revolving around our film as they were ultimately the main target we were trying to attract. However it was unrealistic that only children of that age would see the film so we also asked children of a couple years older to see how children of an older age would react to the conventions of our film. By making the four main characters in the opening sequence reflect different personalities and appear completely differently with the use of the mise-en-scene specifically their clothes, this applied the uses and gratifications theory as the target audience are able to identify personally possibly one or all of the characters as they are of a similar age etc.

Do you think that the narrative of our opening sequence conforms to the conventions of the hybrid genre, fantasy-adventure?
8 6 4 2 0 Yes No In between

The results for this question showed 7 out of the 10 agreed that the narrative of our opening sequence conforms to the conventions of the hybrid genre, fantasy adventure. This automatically meant that the majority of our audience reacted well to our film product. I did want to focus on the two people that didnt actually feel the film represented the conventions well. One of the two in particular stated I didnt like the opening it was boring and dull, however this person was also aged 16-17, which was not our target audience which again confirmed who our target audience was as our film product was more entertaining for a younger audience. One of the conventions that was used in the opening sequence was the need for a dis-equilibrium as this was the main stimuli for the plot. This feed back shows that the majority were able to pick up on the news report related to the main plot was included.

Do you think that we have used appropriate camera shots/angles/composition/movement that are conventional to the fantasy-
8 6 4 2 0 Yes No In between

Again, 6 out of the 10 people agreed that we have used appropriate camera shots/angles/composition/movement that are conventional to the fantasy-adventure genre. It was considerably important the impact of the shots etc. had on our target audience and why they were intentionally used to represent certain social groups and supported the conventions that were used. This was found to be true as one 12-13 year old female stated Yes, as the girl at the bus stop is made to look smaller than her setting which emphasizes how important the location is by using the angles. Specifically in the opening sequence of the The Wanderers, I wanted to include a range of shots that showed Mickey getting out of bed slowly, brushing his teeth etc. To portray this I used a range of shots and angles, for example and extreme close up and a high angle shot. The composition of the cutting also was a progressive pace as the cuts were inserted in a particular pace which made the journey look consistent whilst also trying to make the boy getting out of bed appear more realistic. This camera work and scene all together, attracts the target audience as they not only can identify with waking up early for school(uses and gratifications) but are also observing his actions carefully (voyeurism) as a lot of emphasis has been put into the waking of this one character.

Do you think the use of the soundtrack was conventional of the fantasyadventure genre and effective throughout our opening sequence?

It was interesting to know that overall, our use of soundtrack was conventional to the hybrid genre of fantasy adventure as well as it being effective as during our research of soundtracks of the hybrid genre, we came across specific sounds that proved repetitive as well as effective and when trying to in cooperate them, it was important it was recognisable as a part of the genre. Although, 3 people disagreed and when focusing more on that, all 3 had using the word boring one child even going into detail that it was not specific to adventure soundtracks.

The soundtrack that was used was conventional as it was an orchestral genre as it included the sounds of violins and pianos. This soundtrack did prove to be effective as the volume was lowered on specific scenes which included dialogue and then increased whilst the titles were seen. This attracted our audience as the soundtrack did infer adventure and fantasy and therefore the audience would have been able to escape within the music (uses and gratifications)

Did you find that the titles helped you to understand the narrative more clearly? Do you think that they were appropriate for the fantasy-adventure genre?
8 6 4 2 0 Yes No In between

This question proved out titles were effective as was our choice of challenging one of the conventions by attaching pictures of the feral children to each opening title as the response for this question showed 7 out of the 10 children thought our opening titles helped them understand the narrative more clearly and also thought they were appropriate for the hybrid genre. To support this, one person recognised the relation between the pictures that were attached and the news report in our opening titles.
The titles were effective and appealed to the target audience as they were able to get more from simply reading the titles that appear on screen and actually being able to view the attached photographs as well. By absorbing all this information the hypodermic syringe means they were more like to accept different ideologies and inferences made from viewing this particular visual information.

Is the pace of the editing appropriate for the fantasy-adventure genre?

0 Yes No

Although 6 out of the 10 people thought the pace of the editing was appropriate for the fantasy-adventure genre which was the majority, it wasnt as large of the majority in comparison to the other questions. This meant the overall pace of editing was not as effective as desired but still effective. The pace of the editing required, precisely in the bus stop scene was to highlight Jackies vulnerability staring at the forest opposite her. This was used to attract our audience as they would be intrigued by what she is staring at intensely.

Do you think that the mise-en-scene e.g. location was conventional of an opening sequence to a fantasyadventure film?
7 6 5 4 3 2 1 0 Yes No In between

6 people thought that the mise-en-scene e.g. location was conventional of an opening sequence to a fantasy-adventure film however 2 stated no and 2 other children were unsure. It was satisfying to know that the children did recognise that it would be unrealistic for the film to include locations that represented more exaggerated more fantasy, adventure locations as it was only the opening 2 minutes. It was obvious not all people recognised this as one particular person stated the location is boring nothing fantasy about them.

As the locations used in the final product varied from Mickeys bedroom as he is waking up and the bus stop opposite the forest, this represented realism as it was unlikely and unconventional for their to be an exaggerated amount of the fantasy adventure element involved. Moreover, the locations made sense in terms of the storyline as they were consistent and relevant to what was actually going on.

7 6 5 4 3 2 1 0 Yes No

Only 1 child thought the news report in the opening sequence of our film didnt help them understand the narrative more clearly which was particularly interesting as the news report was mainly used to present a dis-equilibrium that stimulated the plot of the film. It was very good to see 9 out of the 10 children recognised this the build up of the storyline. The news report was used for many reasons which all together attracted our target audience. Firstly, the news report was used as a stimulus for the storyline of the film as it was actually a disequilibrium. The news report also raised awareness on a lost boy and therefore and audiences reaction would be a moral panic which asserts them to the rest of the information being told. They are then able to receive this theory either way as the reception theory states they could either sympathise with what theyre being told or just continue questionning what is being told.

Have we fulfilled your expectation that you have of the fantasyadventure genre?
9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 0 Yes No

Finally, when asked if The Wanderers had fulfilled the expectation of the fantasy adventure genre, 8 out of the 10 people responded well and agreed. As this was an overall question that covered all the processes involved in the creation of this film including the research and planning etc., this meant the film product was an overall success within out target audience as the majority agreed they were content with it being apart of the hybrid genre as well as the representations that were portrayed the film as well as the mise-en-scene, camera work, technical codes proved well as not only are the results from these graphs are proving so but because the sole purpose of them was to attract the audience being targeted.
