Collateral Effects of Antibiotics:

increase in E. coli populations abundance of antibiotic resistant genes

Objective
To prove the increase of antibiotic resistant genes of bacteria in medicated swine.

MATERIALS
Pigs

Techstart 17-25; Kent feeds Antibiotic (ASP250) *chlortetracycline- 100g/ton *sulfamenthazine-100g/ton *penicillin-50g/ton

Fecal sample

METHODS
Choose the swine

DNA Sequencing

Phylotype Analysis

Metagenomic Analysis

Quantitative PCR

Statistical Analysis of qPCR result: Abundance and Diversity

RESULTS
Shifts in community membership with ASP250

Shifts in functional gene abundance with ASP250

Pervasive antibiotic resistance in the Absence of antibiotic exposure.

Nonmedicated
50 different resistant genes.
5 were detected in 66% of samples

Medicated
38 genes were found in one Medicated Sample
19 were detected in 66% of samples 10 were detected in at least 8 or 9 of the samples.

qPCR and Metagenomic analyses reveal shifts in Resistance gene richness and abundance in Medicated pigs.

CONCLUSION
In feed antibiotic in swine increased the diversity and abundance of antibiotic resistance genes. In feed antibiotic increases the abundance of E. coli.

no exposure of sow or piglets in antibiotics except for the treatment.

antibiotics are used to treat and prevent disease in swine, to protect swine welfare, and to improve growth rate and efficiency of feed utilization.
