INTRODUCTION TO PHYSICS

Think, Pair, Share

Introduction, Engagement, recognising prior knowledge

What physics (science) did you experience in your life this morning before coming to this class?

Think about your ideas Discuss with another person in your group Share with the rest of the group Report back one example from your group

What is the scientific process you need to go through?

POE
P = Predict O = Observe E = Explain

What is Physics
The study of natural phenomena eg lightning , sea waves , thunder ,

INTRODUCTION TO PHYSICS
UNDERSTANDING PHYSICS PHYSICAL QUANTITIES MEASUREMENT SCIENTIFIC INVESTIGATIONS

PHYSICAL QUANTITIES
Quantities that can be measured Express in units : SI units (System International Unit) Represent the quantity by a symbol, a numerical value for the magnitude and the unit

PHYSICAL QUANTITIES
Two types of Physical Quantities

1.Base Quantities 2.Derived Quantities

Base Quantities
Physical Quantities that cannot be defined in terms of other quantities the simplest form

Base quantity Length

Symbol l

SI unit meter

Symbol for SI unit m

mass time
Temperature

m t
T I

kilogram second
kelvin ampere

kg s
K A

Electric current

Derived Quantities
Physical quantities derived from combinations of base quantities either by multiplication or division or both

Examples
Derived quantity Area volume speed Symbol A V v
Relationship with base quantities

Derived units m2 m3 ms-1

length x length
length x length x length

distance time

Lets try
It was already 8.00 am when she woke up. The temperature was at 30 oC. She quickly got dressed and started to walk to the library which was 1500 m away. It took her 40 minutes. She took along her 3 kg bag , in which she placed a 2000 ml bottle of mineral water, books weighing 5 N and a 2 m2 piece of mat .

From the description above, identify the physical quantities. Then classify them into base and derived quantities.

Base quantity time mass length/distance temperature

Derived quantity area weight volume

Standard Form

A green light of wavelength of 0.00000051 m travels at a speed of 300 000 000 ms-1. How do we simplified the numbers?

Expressing in standard form

Scientific notation Based on powers of the base number 10 A x 10n Where 1 A <10 , A is either an integer or decimal number n is a positive integer

Using the standard form Wavelength of light = 0.00000051 m = 5.1 x 10-7 m Speed of light = 300 000 000 ms-1 = 3.0 x 108 m s-1

PREFIXES
Used to express some physical quantities that are too large or too small A letter placed at the beginning to modify the meaning eg 1500 m 1.5 km

Prefix teragigamegakilodekadecicentimillimicronanopico-

Symbol T G M k da d c m n p

Value 1012 109 106 103 10 10-1 10-2 10-3 10-6 10-9 10-12

Lets try
a. b. c. 1. Quantities are given as shown below 0.0000061 m 0.0042 s 6750 000 000 kg Write the following quantities in scientific notation. 2. Express the quantities using the correct prefixes.
