TRANSPORTATION MEANS BY WHICH GOODS AND SERVICES ARE TRANSFERRED FROM ONE PLACE TO ANOTHER. TYPES OF TRANSPORTATION:ROADWAYS RAILWAYS WATERWAYS AIRWAYS RAILWAY IS THE CHEAPEST WAY OF TRANSPORT.

FIRST IN INDIAIN 1853 FROM BOMBAY TO THANA. ORIGINALLY OPERATED BY PRIVATED COMPANIES. I925-1950 GOI TOOK OVER THE ALL THE PRIVATE RAILWAY COMPANIES.

IT IS THE LARGEST RAIL NETWORK IN ASIA AND WORLDS SECOND. OVERSEEN BY MINISTRY OF RAILWAYS. IT IS BIGGEST EMPLOYER IN THE WORLD. INDIAN RAILWAYIS DIVIDED INTO 16 ZONES.IT IS AGAIN SUBDIVIDED INTO 67 DIVISIONS.

Trains are classified by their average speed. A faster train has fewer stops ("halts") than a slower one and usually caters to long-distance travel. Rank Train Description 1 Duronto Express These are the non-stop (except for operational stops) point to point rail services introduced for the first time in 2009. They connect the metros and major state capitals of India and are faster than rajdhani Express. They provide first AC, two-tier AC and three-tier AC accommodation. Some of them provide Sleeper Class accommodation. 2 Rajdhani Express These are air-conditioned trains linking major cities to New Delhi. They have high priority and are one of the fastest trains in India, travelling at about 130 km/h (82 mph). They have only a few stops. 3 Shatabdi Express The Shatabdi trains are airconditioned intercity trains for travel during day. They have seats and executive class seats. Some of them 3-tier AC berths. They are the fastest trains in India, travelling at about 140 km/h.

By joining together different areas of the country, railways have made internal trade convenient. They carry goods and passengers to distant places easily. Railways are an important source of employment in India. Lakhs of skilled and unskilled people are employed in operating the railways. It helps in the industrialization process of a country by easy transportation of coal and raw-materials at a cheaper rate.

Railway is the safest form of transport. The chances of accidents and breakdown of railways are minimum as compared to other modes of transport. It encourages mobility of labour ad thereby provides a great scope for employment.

Goods in bulk quantities are carried ,chances of goods getting lost are high in case of railway transport as compared to air and road transport. Railway transport is unsuitable for carrying goods at shorter distances; road transport is most suitable in this case. Proper railway system is not build up in the Indian villages as a result of which railway transport is unsuitable in the villages of India. Delay of trains
