The Smart Grid

The Grid is being transformed to include: Applications for businesses and consumers Bi directional power Bi directional communication and metering Electric vehicles and EV infrastructure

The situation.. as we saw it

Is the grid equipped to handle electric vehicles on a large scale?
If everyone plugged in at the same time, the current grid could not provide electricity to charge all the electric vehicles on the grid, and power reliability could be compromised.

If owners plugged their vehicles into public outlets, would utilities know how to bill the correct consumers without advanced technology? What are the business models around the introduction of the infrastructure to support electric vehicles- who should own the charging stations? The LDCs, host facilities, others? By 2018, there will be at least 500 000 highway-capable plug-in electricdrive vehicles on Canadian roads, as well as what may be a larger number of hybridelectric.. EMC Electric Vehicle Roadmap for Canada 2009.

Project Description
The project is to install electric vehicle service equipment (EVSE) a.k.a charging stations to test the impact of plug in vehicles on the electric power grid. The project will facilitate:
Better understanding of some elements of the smart grid Testing of data collection systems Evaluating the grid impact of charging electric vehicles Testing of Li-ion energy storage systems

The Project
Duration of 1 year Project will involve: Deploying five charging stations throughout the Durham Region
Smart Electric Vehicle Charging

Monitoring the performance of charging stations in different weather conditions Testing the impact of plug in electric vehicles on the grid by Examining the performance of the Li-ion energy storage systems under extreme conditions

Project Benefits
An understanding of how the billing and settlement processes work
Enabling better decisions about when to use energy, especially when charging plug-in vehicles.

Real-time pricing and increased knowledge

Help ensure that the right vehicle account is billed for vehicle charging; similar to cell phone users being appropriately billed even while roaming

An appreciation of the size of service required to supply the charging arrays Conduct load forecasting

Project Benefits Continued

Understand the risks associated with vehicle to grid connections
Develop new training programs/ techniques Gain understanding of generation impacts related to time of use and user load on system Sets the stage for further collaboration and research opportunities
