What comes to mid when you think of the late 60s and early 70s? Why?? mid to late 1960s front wave of baby boomers reached their teens Look at population pyramids on pg. 150 Counterculture: a large group of people in society who express values and behaviours that conflict with societys norms

Some characteristics
Beatles hippies, drugs Vietnam began in 1954 draft in US was not till 1965 many troops were there till 1973 peace symbols sit-ins, peaceful protest Haight and Ashbury San Francisco hippie district Jim Morrison and Doors, Joni Mitchell 1969 half a million people gathered in New York to be part of Woodstock

Had there been less of the Baby Boom demographic would this movement have such an impact on society?

Would the hippies have been squashed by older more traditional people and authority?
What does the interviewer refer to when he says style without content? Were the hippies successful in reaching their goals of peace and freedom? Look to todays society?

Although the centre for this movement was not Canada it still gained momentum partly due to John and Yokos Bed-In in Montreal This was a technological time and youth were influenced through:
Television, radio, news, music

a lot of the music focused on protest and rebellion against authority in general- Vietnam war in particular minority of Canadians adopted the Sex, Drugs and Rock and Roll attitude

some worked to change society through political activism rights of Aboriginal people just after residential schools CYC (company of young Canadians) develop social and economic programs in poor neighbourhoods gave a chance for idealistic young people to work for change

Sexual Revolution

The Pill
birth control pill made widely available at a relatively low price, through doctors prescription introduced in 1961 very successful Thought of as part of the reason for collapse of the baby boom Was thought to eliminate poverty issues and population growth around the world in developing nations between 1965-1975 overall birth rate declined sharply WHY?

The End of the Baby Boom


female boomers were the best educated Canadian women up to that time and more were choosing to continue their careers after marriage
not have children the pill made this possible

baby boomers aged 15 to 24 in 1971 were having fewer children than married women 10 years earlier baby boom was over next generation not to appear on demographic graphs till about 1980 (echo boom)
