What is the mass media?


It has come to play a fundamental role in modern society. Mass media are media of communication newspapers, magazines, television, radio, cinema, videos, CDs, the internet and other forms which reach mass audiences. They not only provide entertainment, but provide and shape much of the information that we act on in our daily lives.

Newspapers
Derived from information sheets circulated in the 1700s. Dailies with high circulation started from 19th century, pioneered in USA, helped by the invention of cheap newsprint. Packages many different types of information into a limited and easily reproducible format. Was the chief way of conveying information cheaply and quickly to mass public. The top newspapers became political force. Now papers can be read online. Will people still buy newspapers?

Television
Increasing in influence: if current trends continue, by age of 18 average child will spend more time watching TV than doing anything else except sleeping! The number of channels is ever increasing, and cable/satellite TV is becoming cheaper. Thus, TV is becoming global medium, not just limited to national borders. Who watches local TV anymore?

Functionalist view: Occupying our leisure time entertainment becomes the obvious function of media. Agent of socialization -increase social cohesion by presenting standard culture -bring social solidarity by focusing common social interests -do you like to consider television as a baby sitter, how can we ignore the impact of violent tv prog.

Enforcer of social norms: -media reaffirm proper act by showing the misconduct and its aftermath -Media sometimes glorify disapproved behaviour, ex, students in hindi movie

Conferral of status: -mass media confer status on people, org. and public issues. -creating star image, celebrity status / fashion -ex people choice of this year

Dysfunctional role of media -Narcotizing dysfunction refers to the phenomenon whereby the media provides such massive amounts of information that the audience become numb and generally fails to act on the information.

Feminist view
Media always represent stereotype and misrepresent social reality. Specially creating a false image of women, ex: advertisement, anchor of program Women are underrepresented Gender advertisement
