SIMULATIONS

Introduction
Simulation creates an environment resembling real life situation It helps the students to practice and gain experience as in a real life situation Can practice confidently when, exposed to real life situation.

Meaning
Simulation is a teaching technique used particularly in management education and training in which a real life situation and values are simulated by substitute displaying similar characteristics. International dictionary of education

Type of Simulation
a) b) c) There are three of simulation namely Simulation exercise, Simulation game and Role playing

Simulation exercise
A controlled representation of a piece of reality that learners can manipulate to better understand the corresponding real situation.

Simulation game
A game that represents real; life situations in which learners compete according to a set of rules in order to win or achieve an objective.

Role Playing
A form of drama in which learners spontaneously act roles in an interaction involving problems or challenges in human relations

Purposes
Simulation is intended to help students practice decision making and problem solving skills and to develop human interaction abilities in a controlled and safe setting.

Purposes
Through an active involvement in a simulation exercise, a game or a role playing situation, the student achieves cognitive, affective and psychomotor outcomes.

Purposes
Simulation provides a chance to apply principles and theories students have learned and to see how and when these principles work.

Purposes
To learn and test carious approaches in a setting where patients cannot be hurt and where wrong decisions can always be reminded. It is hoped that the knowledge gained through simulation can be easily transferred to the real patient care settings.

Value of Simulation
Simulation ensures safe nursing practice by nursing students through bridging the gap theory and practice
Simulation is an effective technique to learn psychomotor skills

Value of Simulation
Simulation helps the students to develop critical thinking abilities and problem solving skills Simulation not only helps the students to learn the decision making process but also provides feedback regarding the consequences of the decision made

Value of Simulation
Simulation, especially the role play enables students to empathize with the real life situations
By way of simulation teacher can easily inculcated proper attitude among nursing students

Value of Simulation
Simulation can also be used to evaluate students a) Which teaching method would you select? b) Justify your selections?

c) List down the techniques you would adopt in order to make the teaching more interesting and comprehensible
d) Identify the techniques in which you are lacking proficiency. e) Explain the measures that will assist you in attaining proficiency in the identified techniques

Role of the Teacher

Planning, Facilitating and Debriefing.

Advantages of Simulations
Simplifies the complexity of real life Highly student centered Facilitates peer learning Excellent opportunity to learn from mistakes

Disadvantages
Generalize the result of a single simulation Particular simulation cannot be blindly applied to another situation Expensive in terms of time, money and energy
