Energy Saving Tips in Day to Day Life

Problem!
Power Shortage Inefficiency leads to pollution

The Solution
Rational use of energy Use of renewable energy sources

Rational Use of Energy

Rational use of energy does not mean sacrifice of the comfortable existence. Rational use of energy means:
The reduction of energy losses The biggest possible exploitation of each energy unit we consume Energy savings potential in household sector is 20%25%. If the electricity bill is Rs 2,000/- per month, one can save Rs 400/- per month by proper use of Air Conditioners / Refrigerators / Heaters / Lights

Energy Savings in Lighting & Fans

Use of Natural Lighting

Replacement of incandescent lamps with CFL

Switch off light when not in use

Use time switch wherever possible

Use electronic choke to reduce power consumption by 25%

Replacement of indication lamps with LEDs

In ordinary 60 Watt bulb, 70% energy is lost for heating it and only 30% energy contributes for lighting

Energy Savings in Lighting & Fans

Use 36 Watt Tubelight or 28 Watt Tubelight in place of 40 Watt Tubelight Use light colours on the walls of the room. Keep the light and fixtures clean.

Clean and lubricate the fans regularly.

Use electronic regulators for energy saving.

Payback period of CFL assuming its cost as Rs 110/- is 6 months only. If 1 Crore 60 Watt bulbs are replaced by 15 Watt CFL for usage of 4 hrs./day, the total energy saved will be 1200 MWh per annum.

Energy Savings in Refrigerators

Buy energy efficient refrigerators (Energy Star rating) Check for the gaskets so that there is no ingress of heat from outside. Do not over load the refrigerator Do not leave the refrigerator door open for a long period.

Use a voltage stabiliser.

Proper servicing from time to time as per recommendation of manufacturer
15

Energy Savings in Refrigerators

Do not place the refrigerator in kitchen, congested area or direct sunlight. Do not allow ice to accumulate in the freezer as its cooling power will reduce. Defrost regularly. Cool the food before putting in the refrigerator. Use Stabiliser with Refrigerators and Air Conditioners and set the voltage to 220 Volts

17

Energy Savings in Air Conditioners

Clean the filter of Air Conditioners Have your mechanic clean the evaporator and condenser coils regularly Get your thermostat cleaned regularly and replace it if not working Avoid frequent opening of doors & windows. A door kept open can result in doubling the power consumption of your Air Conditioners. Electricity cost per hour of use of 1.5 Ton Air Conditioner is Rs 10/18

Energy Savings in Air Conditioners

Ensure direct sunlight (and heat) do not enter the air conditioned space. Energy saving in air conditioners by setting the thermostat to 25 deg. C is about 10%. 1 deg. C lowering the temperature setting results in an extra 3% - 4% of power consumption. Save Rs 1/- per hour by setting the thermostat of air conditioner to 25 deg. C.
19

Energy Savings in Electric Water Heaters

Purchase only ISI marked water heaters. Put-on the water heater only 10-15 min. before use Set the thermostat to 50 Deg. C to save power. Before filling-up the hot water, close the inlet water valve of water heater so that cold water does not flow into the heater. Also, put-off the water heater. Change the heating element every 5-6 years. Save about 15% - 20% of power used by water heater by setting thermostat to 50 Deg. C

20

Energy Savings in Washing Machines

Use washing machines at full load as the

consumption of water will be the same

whether you put half a load of clothes or a full load.

Put-on the washing machine only after the

water and clothes are put into it. Put OFF the washing machine from the main switch.

21

Energy Savings in Television

Switch ON the TV only while viewing. Switch OFF the TV from the main switch and not through remote control.

22

Energy Savings in Computers

Desktop Computer Monitor:
Energy requirement in ON position for 17 inch running monitor : 66 Watt Energy consumption of monitor in sleep mode : 32 Watt

Annual saving potential by switching OFF: Rs 1650/-

Desktop Computer Hard Disk:

Energy consumption in sleep mode: 27.5 Watt
Annual saving potential by switching OFF: Rs 1050/23
