Introduction

OD is concerned with development of individuals in an organization: person focused. Due to issues like mergers and acquisition the focus on people as a means of change has become imperative.

Encounter Groups

Its purpose is to provide participants with intense experiences designed to help them examine their ways of interacting with others, their styles of self-presentation, their basic position and other issues. Participants work in groups of 8-12 people for 1-2 weeks The groups work without any agenda 3/12/13 and with only limited facilitator

Models of Encounter Groups

1. Lewins model 2. Cognitive Dissonance Theory

3/12/13

Lewins model

There are three stages: Unfreezing: It is stimulated by the non directive, unexpected behavior of the facilitator and open feedback. Movement : Stimulated by the group experience itself, in which new norms and rules are formed.

Refreezing : It occurs when the

Cognitive Dissonance Model

Dissonance is the discrepancies between the actual and the expected in at least the following 4 areas:

Participants expectations of trainer and actual trainer behavior Participants self-concept and actual laboratory behavior Participants expectation of groups reactions and the groups actual reactions.

Limitations of EG

Facilitators need to be highly skilled and trained. In the early stages EGs produce high anxiety among participants. EG requires minimum of 8 and maximum of 12 participants. EG requires at least 1 weeks duration

Role Playing

It is a conscious attempt to simulate and examine roles played in real life. It is useful for helping participants explore personal and interpersonal dynamics in organizational life

Perception of others feelings. Autonomy Internalization of learning. Interpersonal Orientation. Leadership and group work. Self Assessment

Instrumentation

Psychological tests, projective techniques, questionnaires, checklists are called instruments. These are increasingly being used for OD interventions. Self-awareness through feedback on instruments (SAFI) is a very powerful intervention. In SAFI participants take initiative 3/12/13 and use scores they receive on

9 Steps of SAFI
1. 2.

Completion of Instrument. Conceptual input: The participants read the theory and related concepts they completed to familiarize them with the conceptual framework of he instrument.

3.

Prediction: The participants predict their scores to refect their self perceptions and understanding of 3/12/13 their own styles and behaviors
