Internet Protocol TV

What is IPTV ?
Internet Protocol television (IPTV) is a system through which television services are delivered using the Internet protocol suite over a packet-switched network such as the Internet, instead of being delivered through traditional terrestrial, satellite signal, and cable television formats.

HISTORY OF IPTV
In year 1994, ABC's World News was the first television show to be broadcasted over the Internet. Term IPTV first appeared in 1995 with the founding of Precept Software by Judith Estrin and Bill Carrico . Software was written primarily by Steve Casner, Karl Auerbach, and Cha Chee Kuan.

EARLIER..
the only ways to watch television were through over-the-air broadcasts and cable signals. With broadcast TV, an antenna picks up radio waves to transmit pictures and sound to your television set. With cable TV, wires connect to your TV itself & these wires run from your house to the nearest cable TV station, which acts as one big antenna.

WHY IS IT REVOLUTIONARY?
True interactive television. See anything you want to see, any time, any where, on any device . Reduced infrastructure costs. IPTV works on your existing internet connection . Infinite number of channels .

IPTV TYPES
Live broadcasts it's like watching live TV on your computer screen. You can't pause, back up or skip through parts of the broadcast that don't interest you.
On-demand videosarranged like a playlist. Episodes or clips are arranged by title or channel or in categories like news, sports or music videos. You choose exactly what you want to watch, when you want to watch it.

How can IPTV compete with existing TV services?

Price: Get your telephone, data and video (called a Triple Play) for a monthly cost. Return path: watching TV on an IP connected service allows delivery of a wide range of extra services from ads to interactive options. An IPTV supplier can push out multiple new channels across their existing bandwidth relatively easily.

Why is IPTV happening now?

Bandwidth is important for Internet TV, because sending large amounts of video and audio data over the Internet requires large bandwidths.

Impact of IPTV
Content With the implementation of IPTV, content will be easily available and easier to access and more importantly, it will be portable and secure. Convergence The utilization of the IP network to deliver many services will help many applications run on one single delivery channel. These services can run on different devices but the delivery will remain on the single channel. Interactivity The attribute that separates IPTV from cable TV is the interactivity. As the network is of a 2 way nature, the customer can interact with other customers on the network.

Components
Video Head end This is where video is captured and processed to that it can be sent over the IP network. Service Provider Core Network This is the core network of the Service provider and includes hardware from many vendors that make up this network. Service provider Access network ADSL network Home network The home network is the last mile. The connection gets into the household through the device and is then connected to the set top box which in turn is connected to the TV.

STREAMING AUDIO AND VIDEO

Basic steps to watching streaming audio and video : 1. A server holds video data. 2. When you want to watch a video, you click the right command, like "Play" or "Watch." This sends a message to the server, telling it that you want to watch a certain video. 3. The server responds by sending you the necessary data. It uses streaming media protocols to make sure the data arrives in good condition and with all the pieces in the right order.

Implementation of ADSL concept

In Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL), a large share of available bandwidth is dedicated for Downstream data transmission.

Used for Bandwidth Intensive services such as IPTV and High Speed Internet.

Why IPTV and not Internet TV ???

IPTV is not TV that is broadcast over the Internet - Equivalent to cable services but delivered via IP-based secure channels. - Carrier-Led controlled platform. - The consumer interacts directly with the operator/carrier. - An end-to-end system or semi-closed network.

Internet TV
- TV is Broadcast over Internet for all. - No carrier-led controlled platform. - YOUTUBE is an example of this.

Its much more than traditional TV....

Interactive Personal Communication

Any Device, no matter

Freedom to move. Fully Personal Fully interactive. Easy to use

IPTV via Internet

Conveniently and easily accessible from different locations in the world. Low set up cost. Large potential viewer base. Picture quality depending on bandwidth. Suitable for viewing on smaller displays only. No guarantee on QoS. Difficult to maintain subscription service.

What is Next : IPTV NGN

IPTV with NGN is a future of IPTV .

A Next-Generation Network (NGN) can be describe as a telecommunications packet-based network that handles heavy traffic (such as voice, data, and multimedia).

Protocols
Live IPTV uses IGMP for connecting to a multicast stream (TV channel) and for changing from one multicast stream to another (TV channel change). IP multicast is driven by Protocol Independent Multicast (PIM), which allows for distribution of multicast streams (TV channels) from their source all the way to the customer who wants to view them. VOD uses UDP or RTP protocols for channel streams and control is done using the Real Time Streaming Protocol (RTSP). A network personal video recorder, like VOD, uses UDP or RTP for IPTV streams and RTSP for end-user control communications.

ADVANTAGES
IPTV signals are 100% digital, so the days of analog TV are fast becoming a thing of the past. Works on your existing internet connection , Install your set-top box and power it on. Doesn't require wires to get its signal. The newest IPTV set-top boxes work on wireless signals. Programs can be stored on servers and ready to view with the click of a button on your IPTV remote.

LIMITATIONS OF IPTV

Quality of Service may reduce significantly due to loss of packets.

Currently no support for HDTV.

FUTURE PROMISES

QUADRUPLE PLAY High Speed Broadband Internet Access + Television + Telephone + Wireless Service Provisions. Using WiMAX technology it is possible to transmit data at greater speeds and over long distances. Integration of RFID will add the capability for home equipment to communicate to the outside world.

Future and World Scenario

Future: - Growth restricted for low broadband penetration. - A great new revenue opportunity once Broadband implemented widely. - Only $30 Million revenue in 2005 - $10 billion in revenue by end of 2010. - $336 Million by the end of 2013. World Scenario: - China: IPTV on Mobile over 2.5G , the Worlds largest, 340 Million Subscriber base.
