DEFINITION OF PASSIVE VOICE


Passive voice is a sentence where the object of an active sentences become the subject of the passive sentences. the students in (a) becomes the subject of the passive sentences in (b). (a) and (b) have the same meaning. Only transitive verbs (verbs that are followed by an object) are used in the passive sentences. It is not possible to use verbs such as : cry, sleep, com (intransitive verbs). Active(a): Mrs. Eviliana helps the student in the classroom. subject verb object adverb Passive(b): The students are helped by Mrs. Eviliana subject verb by phrase in the classroom. adverb

FORMULA OF PASSIVE VOICE


If the sentence in active voice has formula Active : S+ V+ O
So, the sentence in passive voice has formula Passive: O+To be + V3+By+ S

PRESENT CONTINOUS TENSE


Passive voice for present continous tense is a passive condition for present continous tense. Passive voice for present continous tense means that an action or situation in progress at the moment of speaking is being transitioned between the subject and the object. Formula: Active : S + To be + V-ing+ O Passive : O + To be + being + V3+ By + S

Example : Active : (+) I am reading a book (-) I am not reading a book (?) Am I reading a book ? Passive: (+) The book is being read by me (-) The book is not being read by me (?) Is the book being read by me?

Simple Present Tense


Passive voice for simple present tense is a passive condition for simple present tense. This type of passive voice means that actions or situations which are ussually happen or generally occur. Formula: Active : S+ V+ O Passive : O + To be+ V3+ by+ S

Example : Active : (+) I helps her to clean her room (-) I do not help her to clean her room (?) do I help her to clean her room ? Passive : (+) She is helped by me to clean her room (-) She is not helped by me to clean he room (?) Is she helped by me to clean her room ?

SIMPLE PAST TENSE


Passive voice for simple past tense is passive condition for simple past tense. This type of passive voice means that actions or situations that began and ended in the past are being transitioned into passive. Formula: Active : S+V2+ O Passive : O+ To be (was, were)+ V3+ By+ S

Example : Active : (+) We ate some ca yesterday (-) We didnt eat some cake yesterday (?) Did we eat some cake yesterday ? Passive : (+) Some cake was eaten by us yesterdays (-) Some cake was not eaten by us yesterday (?) Was some cake eaten by us yesterday ?

PAST CONTINOUS TENSE


Passive voice for past continous tense is passive condition for past continous tense. This type of passive voice means that actions in progress in the recent past or at the specific time in past is being transitioned into passive form. Formula: Active : S+ Was/ Were+ V-ing+o Passive : O+ Was/were+ being+ V3+ by+S

Example : Active : (+) They were matching pingpong when I met you (-) They were not matching pingpong when I met you (?) Were they not matching pingpong when I met you ? Passive : (+) Pingpong was being matched by them when I met you (-) Pingpong was not being matched by them when I met you (?) Was Pingpong being matched by them when I met you ?

PRESENT PERFECT TENSE


Passive voice for present perfect tense is passive condition for present perfect tense. This type of passive voice means an event that happened (did not happen) at an unknown time in the past is being transitioned into passive form. Formula : Active : S+has/have+V3+O Passive : O+has/have+been+V3+by+S

Example : Active : (+) They have taken my puzzle (-) They have not taken my puzzle (?) Have they taken my puzzle ? Passive : (+) My Puzzle have been taken by them (-) My puzzle havent been taken by them (?) Have my puzzle been taken by them ?

SIMPLE FUTURE TENSE


Passive voice for simple future tense is passive condition for simple future tense. This type of passive voice means a simple factual statement about a future activity or situation is being transitioned into passive form. Formula : Active : S + will + V1 + O Passive : O + will + be + V3 + by + S

Example : Active : (+) My brother will learn mathematics today (-) My brother will not learn mathematics today (?) Will My brother learn mathematics today ? Passive : (+) Mathematics will be learned by my brother today (-) Mathematics will not be learned by my brother today (?) Will Mathematics be learned by my brother today?

Example : Active : (+) Tia is going to sing a song tomorrow (-) Tia is not going to sing a song tomorrow (?) Is Tia going to sing a song tomorrow? Passive : (+) A song is going to be sung by Tia tomorrow (-) A song is not going to be sung by Tia tomorrow (?) Is a song going to be sung by Tia tomorrow ?
