Strengthening the Resilience of the Urban Water Supply, Drainage and Sanitation to Climate Change in Coastal Towns (ADB

TA 7890 BAN)

URBAN WATER SUPPLY

The southern region of the country particularly the coastal belt is very much vulnerable to climate change impacts. Amtali being in coastal belt is under threats from the climate change impacts. The possible climate change impacts are: Increasing temperature leading to increase in water demand; Enhance evaporation rate resulting to drying up surface water pond, lake, canals and water storage/reservoir facilities; Prolonged dry spells during dry season leading to increased water demand; Cyclonic storms like Sidr/Aila cause disruption of water supply; Sea level rise due thermal expansion and melting of glacier or storm surge will increase the risk of salinity intrusion in ground water, the source for urban water supply.

Water Supply: Ensure safe drinking water throughout the year (by increasing public awareness on economic use of water)

Present situation
Pourashava has 2 Production Tube Wells (PTWs) of which one is inoperative. One overhead tank, 18 km pipeline network and 230 deep hand tube wells

Required remedial options

Adaption's as a result of climate change

Increase in water demand due to increased temperatures Local population to be encouraged adopt rainwater harvesting Measures needed to increase resilience of water supply system needed. (Protection of pumping station and electricity supply) In flood prone areas hand tube wells to be installed above flood level. High level tube wells needed in cyclone shelters Consider provision of more OHT to supply water in emergencies 138.70

Ensure safe water for drinking and other domestic uses 24 hours delivery services(by increasing public awareness on economic use of water) To meet water demand for the year 2030, at least 4 Production Tube Wells, 2 Over Head Tanks and 32 km pipelines need to be installed in addition to the existing ones. Ensure safe drinking water in the cyclone shelters during flood times More hand pump tube wells (250) for the city dwellers living outside the piped water supply area need to be installed. Programme to sensitise the community regarding safe water use and hygiene practices.

Present situation
Water Supply System The Pourashava has 2 Production Tube Wells (PTWs) and 1 overhead tank, 26 km pipeline network and 357 deep hand tube wells

Required remedial options

Ensure safe water for drinking and other domestic use throughout the year Meet water demand of the year 2050, at least 5 PTWs, 1 OHT and 20 km pipelines need to be installed in addition to the existing ones. Ensure safe drinking water in the cyclone shelters during flood times More hand pump tube wells (300.) for the town dwellers living outside the piped water supply area need to be installed. Programme to sensitise the community regarding safe water use and hygiene practices. 17760

Present situation
Water Supply System Surface water intakes from Baleshwar River . Public health, During disaster/tidal surge/flash flood, drinking water sources are affected and contaminated as the piped network and hand pump tube wells become submerged. Consequently, the communities suffer from water-sanitation related diseases. Recently, Cyclones Sidr and Aila had a severe impact on public health and the incidence of disease during these cyclones. Baleshwar River is suffering from siltation

Required remedial options

Ensure safe water for drinking and other domestic use throughout the year. Kacha river may be considered as second surface water source for public water supply through SWTP. Rain water may be preserved by constructing adequate reservoir Investigate potential groundwater aquifer through test drilling as alternative source for public water supply (possible areas are Tala and Satkhira union) More hand pump tube wells in feasible area particularly for the city dwellers living outside the piped water supply area need to be installed. Increase flows in Baleshwar River by necessary dredging. Regular water quality monitoring Programme to sensitise the community on safe water use and hygiene practices. 5,397.00 7,337.00
