According to Congressman John Randolph of Virginia in his speech to the House of Representatives in 1811, the real motives of those desiring war with Britain was land greed and a desire to annex Canada. In President Madisons Declaration of War read to Congress in 1812, contends that US seafaring citizens are daily victims of lawless violence. The map showing the US House of Representatives vote for war June shows that most congressmen from New England and the maritime middle-Atlantic states were strong opponents of the War of 1812.
