Introduced by Emile Durkheim (1858-1917). The various parts of society are interdependent and functionally related to each other. These parts include groups, organizations and institutions of society : family, religion, education, politics, economics and health.
All parts complement each other, and the assumption is that a smooth-running, stable system is well integrated. Functionalist see change in systems as helping the system continually adapt to new circumstances.
Change is seen as a slow, deliberate and planned process that does not upset the balance of the system.
Functional research concerns about the structure and functioning of the organizations.
But, functionalism has several problems.
I. Fails to recognize divergent interests, ideologies and conflicting group values. II. Difficulty of analyzing interactions. III. Built-in assumption in functional theory regarding change.
Groups in society are always competing with each other in order to achieve their goals. Havens and have-nots Assumes a tension in society and its parts created by the competing interests of individuals and groups.
