ABSTRACT:

Describes the problem of voltage sags ,harmonic distortion ,power quality (PQ) , repetitive control and its severe impact on sensitive loads.

INTRODUCTION :
DVR
Dynamic voltage restorer is essentially a voltage source converter connected in series with the a.c network via interfacing transformer

OPERATION

The DVR consists of shunt and series converters connected back-to-back through a DC-to-DC step up converter. The presence of the DC-to-DC step converter permits the DVR to compensate deep voltage sags for long duration. The series converter is connected to the supply side whereas the shunt converter is connected to the load side..

NORMAL OPERATION

The network is working under normal condition the DVR is not injecting any voltages to the system. In that case, if the energy storage device is fully charged then the DVR operates in the standby mode.

short circuit
Here the by-pass switch is activated to provide an alternate path for the fault currents. Hence the inverter is protected from the flow of high fault current through it, which can damage the sensitive power electronic components.

A voltage sag is a short duration decrease in voltage values.

short circuits (faults) on the electric power system, motor starting, customer load additions, and large load additions in the utility service area.

A voltage swell is a short duration increase in voltage values.

By large load changes and power line switching.

Power Quality

Power Quality has been widely used during the last decade and includes all aspects of events in the system that deviates from normal operation. It is however more correct to distinguish between voltage and current quality, rather than power quality.

Repetitive Control
Repetitive controller in this thesis has a fast transient response and ensures zero error in the steady state for any sinusoidal reference input and for any sinusoidal disturbance whose frequencies are an integer multiple of

Harmonic Distortion :
The presence of harmonics that change the AC voltage waveform from a simple sinusoidal to complex waveform. Harmonic distortion can be generated by a load and fed back into the AC mains, causing power problems to other equipment on the circuit.

stand by mode

In standby mode the booster t/f's low voltage windingis shotred through the converter .no switching of semiconductors occurs in this mode of operation and full load current vil pass through the primary.

boost method..

ln this injection/boost mode the dvr is injecting a compensating voltage through the booster transformer due to the detection of a disturbance in the supply voltage.

System conguration with a DVR.

SIMULATION
DVR was connected to the system through a series transformer with a capability to insert a maximum voltage of 50% of the phase to ground system nominal voltage. In this simulation the In-Phase Compensation (IPC) method was used. The load considered in the study is a 5.5 MVA capacity with 0.92 p.f, lagging.

CONCLUSION

The simulation shows that the DVR performance is satisfactory in mitigating voltage sags/swells. The DVR handles both balanced and unbalanced situations without any difficulties and injects the appropriate voltage component. From simulation results also show that the DVR compensates the sags/swells quickly and provides excellent voltage regulation. The supply voltage to keep the load voltage balanced and constant at the nominal value.
