An Interfaith Alliance Helping Homeless
Families Achieve Lasting Self-Sufficiency,
by providing:
-- food, shelter, support, case management,
assistance, and on-going care.

* This Volunteer Training Slideshow, was developed by FPSL super volunteer Mary
Applegate (thank you Mary), and should be used in coordination with other FPSL training
material. This slideshow can be altered to fit the needs of your faith group when
conducting trainings.

• Emergency shelter

• Work in partnership with various faith

Intensive Case Management
• All families entering FPSL
• Social worker works daily with guests
• Long range – up to 2 years after guests
find housing
FPSL’s screening process…
• Will you live peaceably with others?
• Will you sign the Guest Guidelines and adhere
to all rules and regulations?
• Will you set, and work on, goals to improve your
families’ situation.
• Screen for, and deny intake to, those with:
• Criminal Record – check national data base
• Drug Test – Instant UA, pass or fail
• Undiagnosed or Untreated Mental Illnesses
Relationships…guests & volunteers
• Do not proselytize
• Show respect for guests’ time, property
opinions, parenting style, etc.
• Maintain appropriate boundaries
– Do not make gifts to guests (money/things)
• Alert Day Center staff of concerns

Have first aid kit available – with gloves for


handling injuries, cuts, bloody noses, vomit.

Reduce the risk – Volunteer Safety
• Always 2 volunteers or 2 adults
• Do not be alone with children
• Parents should care for their children
– Diapers; bathroom; play area (one child);
handling any discipline problems
• Report any incidents immediately
– No matter how small
Points to remember
• We provide shelter and support
• You can’t fix everything
• Day Center staff is on-call
• Keep food simple
• Guests are grateful – just stressed
• Lead by example
• Show respect for guests
• Maintain appropriate boundaries – no gifts
• LOG IT – log all concerns, thoughts, etc.
• All changes in schedule, etc. should be run
through the day center staff
• LOG IN - when volunteering
