THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

Nursing students have many obstacles to conquer in

order to attain their best possible academic performance. It takes a lot more than just studying to achieve a successful college profession. Different stressors such as time management, financial problems, sleep deprivation, social activities, and for some students even having children, can all pose their own threat to a students academic performance. Stress may contribute not only to students health but also to their academic performance.

There are a lot of stress factors that can contribute in

affecting the academic performance of each nursing students. One of the most common stress most nursing students experience is the overloading of requirements

There are three classified sleepers those college students made-up: Short, average and long sleepers. Short sleepers are the one who slept for only five to six hours Average sleepers who slept for exactly eight hours Long sleepers who slept approximately nine to ten hours a day. Sleeping shorter amounts of time has shown to increase factors such as anxiety and stress, which have been associated with academic performance (Kelly et al, 2001).

These factors cause students problems by causing: Shortened attention span Increasing the number of errors students make on tests. Another factor is the class attendance. Attendance itself can be related to stress factors like insufficient sleep, job responsibility, illness and also having a family or children to care for. Having a class at seven thirty in the morning can be a huge problem for students deprived of sleep, especially for those students who attend classes during the day and works their requirements at night.

There are also factors that may contribute as a stress and may affect the academic performance of each student enrolled in nursing course such their: Nutritional status Exercise routines Sleep patterns Social activities Related learning experience requirements that includes nursing care plan, drug study, physical assessment and case studies.

This study aims to identify stress factors that have

been affecting the academic performance of the fourth year nursing students during their third year level.

This study will help fourth year nursing students of the Ateneo de ZamboangaUniversity in managing stresses and improves their academic performance.

In this study we are going to have five (5) representatives per section from A to F which is thirty (30) students as respondents from the level four of nursing in Ateneo de Zamboanga University. A Yes or No questionnaire and an Interview will be given to these respondents for us to be able to gather data and to prove the study.

Find out whether there is a correlation between the

students stress on their academic performance of nursing 3rd year student of 2011 - 2012. To determine the possible stress factors that the students perceive may contribute to their academic performance. Is there any significant difference in the stress among the 3rd year nursing students in Ateneo de Zamboanga University.

There is a correlation between the stresses that may

contribute on the academic performance of the student. The 4th year nursing will able differentiate the kinds of stress that may affect their academic performance such as the nutrition, Sleep, relationships, social activity, financial and Course load. The researcher will able differentiate the stress that commonly occur on the students, will able to teach them how to cope and manage stress.

Operational:
Stress is the physical and psychological effects nursing

students experience as a result of the way they react to changes in the surrounding environment. Academic refers to how nursing students deal with their studies and how they cope with or accomplish different tasks given to them by their teachers. Performance is an act of nursing students in doing the required skills needed to complete their task. Nursing - the course of the students that were chosen for the study

Cope and manage stress to improve academic performance of ADZU 4th year nursing students

This study will require the help of the fourth year

nursing students to give there view toward the stress and their academic performance. In this way, the researchers will be able to identify if the correlation and differentiate the factor that affect their studies. This study will also be useful for the clinical instructors to be aware of how nursing students cope and manage the stress. REVIEW OR RELATED LITERATURE

According to researchers, training to be a nurse

involves exposure to many stressors. Whatever they are studying, most students face the stresses of leaving home and adjusting to university life with the attendant financial worries, time pressures and anxieties associated with examinations and assessments. But nursing students face additional pressures. Nursing students also have to deal with the tensions inherent in the transient, but intense relationships with patients and colleagues that characterize much of health care.

Too much stress can interfere students preparation,

concentration, and performance but positive stress can be helpful to students by motivating them to peak performance .
Those studies carried out with medical students show

that in the academic area, heavy work load, examinations and meeting deadlines for assignments were the most common causes of stress (Evans &Fitzgibbon, 1992; Kohn & Frazer, 1986).

Obviously, test or exam anxiety is one of the main

causes to academic stress and most university students seem to be more emotionally vulnerable due to examinations. Increased anxiety from tests has a debilitating effect on students performance.
Stress associated with academic activities has been

linked to various negative outcomes such as poor health (Greenberger, 1981; Lesko & Summerfield, 1989), depression (Aldwin &Greenberger, 1987), and poor academic performance (Clark & Rieker, 1986; Linn & Zeppa, 1984).

Methodology of the Study

The study will use quantitative type of research. The

study aims to determine the stress factors affecting the academic performance of the third year nursing students of the Ateneo de Zamboanga University 20112012. In this, it will help the student to become aware and help them cope and manage stress to improve their academic performance.

The researchers will be using a Yes or No questionnaire

and evaluation tool that will help in the success of the study.

The respondents in this research will all be coming

from fourth year nursing of the Ateneo de Zamboanga University. We will have five (5) respondents per section A to F. To sum up there will be thirty (30) respondents all in all. A consent letter will be given before the interview phase.

The study will be conducted at the Ateneo de

Zamboanga University College of nursing with the permission of the dean.

The first step is to select for the potential respondents of

this study. A help from the college of nursing are sought to identify and locate the respondent of the case study. Thus the identification of the respondents become purposive and chain referral at the same time. After identifying and locating the respondents, the researchers will approach and visit them personally to introduce their selves, build rapport and state the objectives of their study then the respondents will agree and participate in the study. Yes or No questionnaire and evaluation tool will be given to answer. All the respondents will be assured that their response will keep confidential.

The researchers will compile the five point rating scale

and evaluation tool answered by the fourth year clinical instructors. The researchers will use mean (X) and standard deviation (SD) for statistical data.
