Marketing channel defined


Manufactures focus: movement of products thru various intermediaries to ultimately reach the customer. Intermediaries consider flow of title to the goods, safeguard of risks, operate a profitable enterprise as the key role of marketing channel. Customers view the marketing channel as lot of intermediaries between them and the manufacturer.

Channel strategy and logistics management are closely related. Channel strategy is a much broader and more basic component than logistics . Channel strategy meets the organization's distribution objectives. Logistics is more narrowly focused on providing product availability at the right time and place.

Distribution channel activities arise due to discrepancies between typical manufacturing activity and consumption activity. Discrepancies vary at different situations. The general discrepancies that exist are:

Spatial discrepancy: Exists because of the physical distance between point of manufacture and point of consumption. limited manufacturing locations and widespread consumption locations.
